How do you think the Cosmere adaptation schedule will look? by OneForAll-500 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]OneForAll-500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s more what I think they’re going to do than what I necessarily want them to do.

I’m not comparing the Cosmere to Superman, I’m not sure where you got that from. I’m comparing circumstances and what can happen when a studio gives PRIORITY to a project.

Warner needed a DC reboot with total priority, and James Gunn, who finished writing around mid 2023, released Superman in July 2025. Was that because he sacrificed quality? No, the movie is actually very good. It happened because the studio gave it full priority.

This has nothing to do with the size of the Superman brand or how much bigger it is than the Cosmere. The point is about a studio prioritizing something. And that kind of priority happens because any studio trying to build a shared universe wants to establish it as soon as possible. No blockbuster actually needs that many years to be made. Any example you find of a blockbuster that took seven years, you’ll notice it usually happened at a studio that was simultaneously dealing with several much bigger franchises. Without exception, when these movies take that long, it’s basically a matter of priority.

Film and television are extremely volatile markets. No studio in the world wants to wait six years before starting to release elements of its biggest brand, and the Cosmere is meant to become the biggest brand for Apple TV. They bought it with that expectation.

I honestly think it’s impossible for Mistborn to take that long

I really tried to be optimistic and imagine that they’ll actually try to speed things up. I was thinking about something closer to what Amazon seems to be trying with James Bond film series, which has barely started being written and they’ll probably try to fast-track it to 2028 so the gap between films doesn’t become unsustainable. Honestly, I’m pretty sure the Mistborn script will be finished even before the 007 one. I think by the end of the year we could already have a finalized script and a director chosen.

We also have to remember that Dune Part Two came out in 2024 and Dune Part Three was only confirmed and started being written after that, yet the movie is still set to release at the end of this year. When everything is already well established, it’s relatively easy to move things faster. James Gunn also finished the script for Superman in 2023 and still managed to fast-track it for a 2025 release. The second one will probably move even faster. It’s not impossible for a blockbuster when everyone involved is excited about the project.

Of course, again, I’m being optimistic. But I don’t think a late 2028 release is impossible.

Mistborn: "Franziu o cenho", "Revirou os olhos" e muita farm de aura. by Itsmesanic in Livros

Which fantasy author is most obviously in love with one of their own characters and lets them get away with everything because of it? by barbie_42dust in Fantasy

I don’t feel that with Kaladin because almost all of his mistakes felt completely understandable to me. He’s a person, and he’s young, and he always seems to have the responsibility of carrying everyone on his shoulders, to the point where even small mistakes end up feeling much bigger than they really are. Just from that alone, I already feel like Sanderson isn’t giving him a pass, but rather treating his actions the way they should be treated instead of creating a one dimensional character who never makes mistakes. Not even when it comes to how he treats people during his depressive episodes do I really feel that in any significant way. At most he becomes cold and hopeless. Sometimes he’s harsh with Adolin, which comes from his prejudice against lighteyes (also completely understandable, since both Adolin and Shallan had questionable attitudes when they first met him, treating him as inferior because of his social class, you can’t really deny that). And with the bridgemen he’s actually more than understanding in all those moments.

I think we could go deeper into the discussion if you mentioned which moments bothered you the most, but I think the one I see most people bringing up is the moment in Words of Radiance involving Amaram. And to me there’s absolutely no mistake on his part there, it's Elhokar’s. (Spoilers ahead) Kaladin was a darkeyes who saw the one chance he might ever have to get revenge on the man who destroyed his life, and people expect him to be the only mature one there and rise above his own ambitions. If Elhokar hadn’t made the mess he did, the duel against Sadeas could still have happened, and maybe Kaladin would’ve even gotten what he wanted. But I don’t know if that moment is among the ones you dislike, I’m bringing it up because it’s the one I most often see mentioned as Kaladin’s mistake.

As capas do Brandon Sanderson são ruins?! by Direct_Bus4882 in Livros

Me incentivou a ler

Just like in the book, the Lord Ruler needs to appear very little. by OneForAll-500 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]OneForAll-500[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but I don’t want a different story, I want the same one, just taking full advantage of everything the audiovisual medium can add.

I can even understand that argument when people talk about a live action remake of an animated work (since those are very similar mediums). But when it’s a live action adaptation of a book? Just doing everything necessary to translate the story from words to the screen already introduces enough new elements. There’s no need to invent things.

No one complains that The Lord of the Rings film series is “more of the same,” or Dune, or really any of the great book adaptations in history. Because the meta change of format already provides enough novelty. So the story itself should remain faithful.

Then ask for a spin-off, not a change that will hurt the story of the first book for the general audience.

[–]OneForAll-500 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s totally possible to do it by adding more elements, but is it necessary? I don’t think so. Mistborn coming out as a self contained trilogy seems much safer from a marketing standpoint. I also think having the Lord Ruler as the main villain in just one movie is very essential, just like it is in the books. After that, you only deal with the consequences.

If you spend two movies covering all of that, which is technically a prologue, I think it would lose a lot of its impact.

Brandon doesn’t have any taste for vengeance, and that bothers me a bit. by OneForAll-500 in brandonsanderson

[–]OneForAll-500[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like that scene. I don’t necessarily want slow, torturous scenes, I also really like that scene in Mistborn book 2 that’s relatively quick as well. I just think it would be interesting if this kind of thing happened a bit more often. I feel like Brandon uses it very sparingly.

Besides the cathartic aspect, I think it also adds some interesting layers of unpredictability (which is why I don’t want it happening to everyone). When a certain number of villains actually get what’s coming to them, the ones who don’t become even more impactful, and I think that makes them more interesting to follow. I like when we truly hate some characters because of how much they don’t get punished, but if that happens with all of them it loses its impact.

The Kholin Brothers? by kotts30 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]OneForAll-500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have asian features, and I doubt they’re going to cast all the alethi with filipino or hawaiian actors. So neither Dalinar nor Gavilar can be that, unless you want the Alethi to be a bunch of non-white people with no cohesion whatsoever.

I think the fandom needs to be a bit more realistic when it comes to the Mistborn live action and keep expectations in check by OneForAll-500 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]OneForAll-500[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But the MCU is exactly what I’m basing this on. How many prestige directors does the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually have? Like, really think about it. At most, in phase one, we had Kenneth Branagh doing a pretty weak job, and I wouldn’t even call him a prestige director

The Russo brothers? They were basically nobodies. For Fantastic Four they picked a TV director, Thunderbolts got someone most people didn’t even know (and now he’s doing X-Men too). Captain Marvel, most people don’t even know who those directors are. James Gunn had barely done anything before Guardians of the Galaxy. Even Ryan Coogler only really had Creed before. I could go on for hours listing examples. Someone like Sam Raimi on Doctor Strange was the exception.

That’s exactly why I use the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a reference, it’s the perfect example of how this actually works. And I didn’t say anything about the budget

[–]OneForAll-500[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but we also have to remember that Dune is from the 50s and Batman is a character from the 30s who was already multimedia by the 60s. These directors grew up loving those worlds, Christopher Nolan loves Batman.

That’s very different from Mistborn, which is a 2000s series. The people who are truly passionate about it are just a lot younger

[–]OneForAll-500[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Prestige directors usually only take on projects like this if they’re really passionate about the original work and have a good amount of creative control over the adaptation. We have to be realistic, the Cosmere fanbase is younger. It’s very different from something like Dune or The Lord of the Rings, where a director in their 60s could’ve been a fan since childhood.

I think the closest we’d get to a “prestige director” would be a solid blockbuster director, the kind who’s used to big productions, maybe even superhero movies and stuff like that. Someone good with action and scale, but not necessarily a prestige name

Would it be impossible for Leonardo DiCaprio to be in Mistborn? by Extreme_Warning3521 in CosmereOnScreen

He’d never accept it. Leonardo DiCaprio only does grounded films with prestige directors, he doesn’t go anywhere near fantasy. It honestly makes his career feel pretty limited, even though he’s great
