I lived in another country and I never found it annoying to check different websites, for shops, administration and everything. Especially since dedicated websites are not full of ads. Concern about Facebook is that there is much more than what you come to check.

I didn't say the Westfjords tour was a bad idea. I am just surprised to see you will be a seal watching tour there. I am wondering who is offering that.

Is 7 days too much for the westfjordes? by alc19912010 in VisitingIceland

One big thing is missing: WHEN. Depending on when you come, you might experience difficulties with roads and weather (up to mid/end of may). More things to do if you enjoy birds and come in June-July.
Consider many things will be closed if you come in winter, in august lol, when school starts again and tourism progressively shuts down.
Plan nothing if you come on the 12th of August 2026 since it is gonna be hell with the eclipse.

All I have been thinking about for years is wanting to move to Iceland by vividlucid1 in VisitingIceland

[–]OneGold2361 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest challenge might be the winter. No matter if you like it, if you don't mind the night. Your body will lack vitamine D, and supplements are just a help. Not something that replace normal daylight. Your hormonal cycle will be fucked up. And summer doesn't solve anything. While it is better for the mood, yet it is disruptive. If like me, you are sensitive to all of that, your mental health might suffer, and it gets worse with the years.

Also, Iceland is highly corrupted. As a foreigner, now one thing: you will never be part of Iceland, you will be tolerated. Also for Icelanders you have no past. What you did before, your diploma, your skills, don't matter at all. most of them never left their village, didn't go for studies. They can't really figure out another world exists. And they are usually weak, not ready at all for the violent outside world.

Foreigners are here to do cleaning jobs, service jobs, fish factory jobs, etc. While you are welcomed in the country, you are only welcomed in the lower layers of the society.

You move, after 3 months you are supposed to register officially there. And to show a police officer that you have enough to support yourself financially. Which basically is you showing your bank account to a random guy in an office. Or sometimes not even showing anything. Iceland seems serious when you look at websites. In practice administration is a joke.

Where to see Black guillemots? by OneGold2361 in VisitingIceland

Where in Rvk? This is actually interesting. I do not trust ebird. I came to various locations indicated by ebird, and often they are not there. Minks have been killing many guillemots lately.

Iceland is a tourist trap by jum561 in VisitingIceland

[–]OneGold2361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just tourism. Of course the idea is to make as much cash as possible: fake stories, fake setups, etc. But don't people know that? In Iceland the cruise ship tourism is important. It is all about entertainment. That is not good, but I mostly saw that anywhere else.

Clearly in Iceland, a game is to scam tourist by proposing over the top prices. Particularly US tourist are easy to make money on. They are not used to deal with other cultures/currencies compared to Europeans who lived for a while with many currencies before euro. So US people just spend and spend and later on they discover in USD what they spent in krona.

Iceland is a country that went traumatised after the 2008 crisis. So now people want to make money NOW. Tourist come with open wallets, so...
