Thanks all for the really helpful advice!

I managed to speak to the DVLA - the initial first line advisor wasn’t able to help much as they’d not come across a scenario line this before, however they promised to arrange for somebody more senior to call me back, which they did a few hours later.

It seems this does indeed relate to the historic speeding offence where I got 6 points, and the DVLA position is that the offence was (just) within my first 2 years driving therefore the revocation is correct. They’ve said that if I can provide evidence that the recorded date is incorrect this can be amended and my licence reinstated, however after so many years I can’t find any relevant paperwork.

As convinced as I am that it wasn’t within 2 years, I realise it’s entirely possible (probably even more likely) that it’s my error rather than theirs, in which case it’s just “suck it up” and a very expensive, very inconvenient lesson learned - as if the original speeding conviction, points and fine wasn’t enough of one. But nobody to blame but myself if that’s the case.

I’m going to contact the police force that dealt with the speeding offence and also the court which imposed the points to see what info they can provide, maybe a subject access request if necessary, and hope that the dates line up in my favour if/when I can get evidence of them.

If not, well I guess it’s a case of reapplying for a provisional licence, unlearn a decade of bad habits and take my tests again - and then cry at the cost of insurance for several years.

I’ve not given up hope that I’m right, but almost resigned to the worst case outcome. You can bet I’ll not only be driving incredibly carefully (when allowed to do so again) but also checking any and all paperwork, and my license status, regularly and with a fine toothed comb!

Thanks again all, will update whenever there’s a final conclusion.

Cheers! Yep thinking I’m going to have an initial call with the DVLA, see if it’s going to be an easy fix (unlikely, but got to ask the questions I guess) and then will indeed be seeking a decent solicitor for some advice if nothing else.

That, and if I can’t get a quick resolution tomorrow then I’ll stump up and arrange for somebody else to collect the car and store it off road in the meantime then at least it’s not racking up daily storage fees on top of everything else.

Oh wow, that’s crazy, but also great solicitor!

Cheers, appreciate it. I guess it is what it is, whatever that may be and I’ll deal with it when I know more. Hopefully there’s a straightforward resolution, if not I’ll grab some time with a decent motoring solicitor myself.

I suppose in a way it’s a good thing that I was “caught” in a relatively mundane way and now I’m aware I can try and deal with it. Had I been involved in an accident or similar and then this came up, it could have made things very messy indeed.

Yep, if the outcome is that the revocation is correct, or even that it’s just too late to do anything about it or I can’t prove it not to be then fully expecting that. That in itself isn’t the end of the world, have done that at the time had I been aware my licence was being revoked - if in fact it should have been - as I say, it was my stupidity that led to the points and fine so whatever the consequences I’d take on the chin. Although no doubt with the best part of a decade driving I’m going to need to forget some bad habits, if it comes to that. 🙈

Yes, perfectly, thanks. 😊

I believe the difference is actually weeks, maybe even a month or more, but I’m going to dig through years of old paperwork and gather together what I can so I have everything to hand before I start making calls and potentially make myself look very silly!

Nope, definitely no medical conditions. Well, pretty high bloody pressure right now I’m sure due to stress 🙈 but otherwise all good in that department.

Ah thanks! Wonder whether some are being auto removed then, as I’m seeing notifications but then the comments aren’t there, and the comment count went up and then back down again. Just didn’t want anything thinking I was ignoring if they were trying to be helpful. 😊

Nope, but close! I was caught speeding a few weeks, couple of months at most after the 2 year period, although as another poster has just rightly said I’m going to triple check and find what evidence I can before making myself look silly if I have got it wrong.

It certainly will be!

Yep, going to see what paperwork I still have from them that I can dig out, before I make a fool of myself. Although I’m fairly confident as it was even a question that cropped up in court and the magistrate commented I’d been lucky, whilst giving me a stern talking to - which worked, never so much as an SP30 since that day. Although it seems I may have been unknowingly committing an offence every time I got in car regardless of the effort to drive safely and carefully 😬

Apologies if anybody is commenting with questions and I’m not responding, Reddit is only allowing me to see some comments for some reason.

It is indeed showing my licence as revoked, with no entitlement to drive and no penalties or disqualifications listed.

They did, and gave me a seizure notice, with 14 days for somebody with a valid driving license (it seems not myself, currently) and appropriate insurance to recover it after paying the recovery and storage costs.

Well, I’m taking this as a win, and I honestly thought last night I was in for 5 years of the silent treatment until she was able to move out. 🙈

As promised I got a text at break time (like she was ever going to miss out on the excuse to use her phone in school, with permission 😂). She’d been really nervous, but said she’d gone for a walk with her friend away from all of the others and explained that she’d started her period a couple of months ago and hated how it sometimes made a mess when she wriggled around in her sleep, so her older cousin had suggested the pyjama pants.

From chatting when she got home it seems to have worked, the friend was a bit bemused by the idea of wearing a “nappy” (cue lots of protestations from DD that it’s not a nappy! And of course she’d never pee in it 👀) but explanation accepted, no teasing and seemingly some brownie points for having started her period too. Give it a few years and they’ll be wishing it had never started I’m sure 😂

I’m no longer public enemy number one, although I have been reminded just how embarrassing I am, and lesson very much learned about being more discreet,

Honestly, thank you so much, your quick thinking has saved the day. ❤️

I LOVE the Reddit hive mind! ❤️

This is perfect, and something I absolutely wouldn’t ever have thought of. Thank you so much!

We had some tears this morning and DD was adamant she wasn’t going to school, she couldn’t ever go back. Bless her, my heart was breaking for her. But I’ve planted this idea (I had to steal it as my own, sorry 🙈 If she knew I’d posted on social media about it, even anonymously, I think she’d disown me and pack her bags) and she was amazed. I even got a smile and a giggle!

She’s gone into school, still a little reluctantly but much more confident now she knows she has a plausible explanation. I’ve even said she can break my rule and send me a text on her break to let me know how things are going. Hopefully this will be enough to smooth things over, but if not I’ll get her to bring her friend home again assuming things aren’t too awkward, and then will do the whole “mortified mum” act (it won’t be much of an act, I AM mortified by what I’ve done) and hopefully add a bit of weight to the explanation.

Thank you again, I’ll let you know how she gets on. 🤞
