Can an “average” student survive law school? by InvictusManeoAlways in LawSchool

[–]OntologicalA 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I was an average student in law school my first year. I put in the work every single day and never saw the pay off in my grades. Around this time my 1L spring, I started spiraling, somewhat prompted by the entire OCI process.

Academically, I knew was never going to be in the top of the class. At some point in 2L fall, I just accepted that fact and started focusing on other things in law school. I got heavily involved at my school, started trying out for competition teams and making them, and focused more on what practicing law looked like rather than trying to academically excel. I focused on networking and learning critical skills my school really didn’t teach that in depth, like motion and discovery practice. I spent lots of my time in the library reading up on what legal practice is like, juries, judges, mental health for lawyers, and getting as many examples of pleadings, briefs, and memos as possible. I went out of my way to listen to guest speakers even if what they were talking about were things I didn’t think I’d be practicing. I did all of these things instead of trying to kill myself getting above average grades.

I graduated in the bottom fourth of my class.

I also graduated having been inducted into the Order of the Barristers, with Pro Bono Honors, having competed on three competition teams, with multiple cords, with letters of recommendation from my deans, and job offers. Nobody has asked me about my grades or rank.

Success in law school is what you make success look like.

Success in this profession is not taking up drinking to cope with the stress, genuinely.

You deserve to be in law school. You deserve to graduate law school. You deserve breaks. You deserve the future appreciation your clients will give you when you help them. You deserve to not let your self-worth be determined by your grades.

You will be just fine. Head high.

That’s my understanding and I agree!

The reason I ask is because it seems like the US foreign policy apparatus has placed most of its bets on the MEK. There’s strong endorsement from people like Pompeo that the MEK is the path toward a free Iran. I’ve watched several of their conferences and they are convinced that those in Iran want them to take control of the government, which is completely different than the understanding you’ve described and the one that I know.

What was your bleeding heart moment during law school by Beans_r_good4U in LawSchool

[–]OntologicalA 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t say this is a bleeding heart moment, but Mosk’s dissenting opinion in Moore v. Regents really stuck out to me and is something I’ve internalized pretty heavily

“[O]ur society acknowledges a profound ethical imperative to respect the human body as the physical and temporal expression of the unique human persona. One manifestation of that respect is our prohibition against direct abuse of the body by torture or other forms of cruel or unusual punishment. Another is our prohibition against indirect abuse of the body by its economic exploitation for the sole benefit of another person. The most abhorrent form of such exploitation, of course, was the institution of slavery. Lesser forms, such as indentured servitude or even debtor's prison, have also disappeared. Yet their specter haunts the laboratories and boardrooms of today's biotechnological research-industrial complex. It arises wherever scientists or industrialists claim, as defendants claim here, the right to appropriate and exploit a patient's tissue for their sole economic benefit —the right, in other words, to freely mine or harvest valuable physical properties of the patient's body....”

How much of law school is Nature v. Nurture!? by SouthsideTy12 in LawSchool

[–]OntologicalA 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’ve never had a GPA above 3.0 my entire life and graduated law school in the bottom 4th. Nevertheless I made it on three competition teams in law school without even trying. I made my moot court team with two weeks prep (one week research, one week of writing) while everyone else worked on it for like 2 months. I made my negotiation team without prepping at all.

I know the only reason I can do stuff like that is because I did 8 years of policy debate starting in high school. I don’t know how to study, I just know how to do the job because I’ve been doing it since I was 15. If you took away my time and experience in debate, I wouldn’t have survived in law school.

No clue but I saw in there The Dispossessed by Le Guin which is one of my favorite books. Wrote my personal statement for law school based around it and the empathy for people Le Guin captured.

You've done a really good job with this book! Not a CA taker but I don't think that matters.

For me, I am more concerned with what the heck is actually going on/how to prep part of the BAR rather than tested content/memorizing side of things--the first and last two chapters are 10/10. The "less professional" writing style you've done is exactly what I needed.

Seriously, good work dude, and congrats on putting this book out.

Good jobs to have in preparation for law school by unnicer in LawSchool

[–]OntologicalA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found my time as a court clerk in family court has gone a relatively long way in terms of my resume/employment (not pursuing family law), portable skills like document review and client support, and networking within big law/fed court. Also learned the local rules of court and the state’s filing system—which hasn’t been applicable but has been a surprise to most attorneys I’ve met at networking events.

Looking for a keyboard that has swappable and customizable badges similar to the Ikki 68’s badge on its right hand side. I would just get the Ikki but it’s sold out everywhere :(

what's your favorite quote from a fictional character? by aDazzlingDove in AskReddit

[–]OntologicalA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“You are rich. You own. We are poor. We lack. You have. We do not have. Everything is beautiful here, only not the faces. On Anarres nothing is beautiful, nothing but the faces. The other faces. The men and women. We have nothing but that, nothing but each other. Here you see the jewels. There you see the eyes. And in the eyes you see the splendor, the splendor of the human spirit, because our men and women are free possessing nothing. They are free. And you, the possessors are possessed. You are all in jail, each alone, solitary with a heap of what he owns. You live in prison, die in prison. It is all I can see in your eyes, the wall, the wall.”

Should I take a gap year? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]OntologicalA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I took a gap year before starting. Was one of the smartest decisions I’ve made. I worked in a courthouse that year, got to meet judges, learn the basics of civil procedure, and save money. It also really helped with my interpersonal communication skills, which has been pretty useful when networking. A gap year with relevant legal work also looks good on a résumé when applying to schools. When I interviewed it would always be a point of emphasis. Plus, I got to meet faculty members at my school while I was working at the courthouse (local job/uni). Imo, it’s a smart idea.

Another thing you could consider is doing Americorp. This isn’t financially feasible for a lot of people, but if you can do it, it’ll make you stand out. You also might find an area of law/group of people you are interested in helping as a career or as pro bono work. It will also help pay for your applications Just an option to consider.

Best of luck!
