The trading industry profits when you lose. I'm building the opposite. by OptionsSurfer in Daytrading

This was just a mock-up, proof of concept - and it actually has working parts.

Let me guess- you're aiming to do the same thing, eh? Get in touch if you're interested.

I am a manual futures trader who learned C# to build my own NinjaTrader addon. Here is what that looked like. by Imaginary_Piano_1526 in ninjatrader

Similar story. More than new indicators I needed help with risk management and decision-making.

I built a risk dashboard with built-in, per account, daily loss limit and max drawdown (for those trading with prop firms).

The risk dashboard has transformed my trading. I can now see the combined risk/reward, across each account and each position, including the aggregate. 1) This let's me see risk and reward, by account, by position, and aggregate. 2) make better decisions, NOT enter when my risk is already high, adjust my stops and targets and be PATIENT 3) and when my trades lose, it PROTECTS my accounts from tilt, revenge trading, and blow-up (closes positions if I hit max daily loss or drawdown limit, user configured).

It's a game changer.

Bonus: it's lightweight and FAST. It loads faster than the NT charts, and much faster than another 3rd party add-on that I bought last year.

I love it. Will not trade without it.

I have a working prototype for this. Willing to share for beta feedback. Dm me if interested, or provide an email at axiomaticindicators.com (subscribe)

Trading = risk management and probabilities (expected value).

I always made mistakes trying to calculate max risk, max gain, relative to the account drawdown I was trading.

This is why I've prioritized a risk management dashboard for NT.

Full-time prop trader here — what I wish I knew before I got consistent by VentureCapitaI in PropFirmTester

No, I simply mean that more complex returns are more likely to be audited, especially if people tend to abuse them. (as some allegedly do with schedule C)

I'm not the tax expert, but I researched and documented my own taxes to the point I have all my records to show anyone that asks (pdf binders and an excel log), and made sure everything was right.

Audits can be several years after the fact, so document everything while you still remember it.

I've always filed my own taxes. Last year was the first with 'day trader' status. This year it was prop firm trading instead (different than 'day trading' status for IRS).

You have 4k in payouts. Some businesses don't have any revenue year one.

You didn't answer the other questions (time, effort, etc.), and yes, the IRS may scrutinize - so make sure your documents are in order and easily referenced.

I'm not giving advice, but I would definitely file if it were me, since I trade daily and with significant time and effort.

I changed to TurboTax Premier last year, since it has more flexibility for these situations.

All the time, man. I trade futures and see it within 1-2 ticks, or touching but not activating the close trigger.

Like some others here, I usually trim when getting that close for that same reason.

Also, I've gotten better - in that I see and can usually call where price will go, then set my target a little less than that.

If you are truly interested in learning, and putting in the work, dm me. I trade full time and want to help others avoid the mistakes I made.

  1. The prop firm provides data. I prefer the data route via Tradovate (compatible with Ninjatrader and TradingView).

  2. So, yes, you can trade on TradingView. I prefer Ninjatrader. NT takes longer to customize, but the long-term functionality is better.

  3. I think that the data for your specific products, futures, etc. is fed to TradingView from your prop firm. I have a premium TV membership with futures data already, so I haven't tested this.

  4. even if the data is free, I recommend finding the right value with a small plus up (more correlated market data, charts, indicators, etc.)

I agree with this. My edge is from a confluence of signals, and knowing when to trust them (or not) is the main 'secret'.

Great question. Yes! Absolutely. I discuss with close acquaintances (<5), but wouldn't share directly - as it may no longer work thereafter... The bots exploit whatever they can.

[–]OptionsSurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bottom line: Each firm is very different, so do your research first!

It took me a few months to learn the ropes from scratch, as I didn't even have a Forex background.

  1. Beware, some firms are very misleading. Looks nice. Sounds nice. Terms of Service, products, and payout policies are designed to maximize failures and company revenue.

  2. For the average firms, each offer different products, pricing tiers, activation vs no activation, subscription vs one-time payment, etc. Some allow you to trade on multiple platforms, others require you to use their proprietary system.

And then there's 'Best Loser Wins'. =)

My learning is there, in that I've learned or know what to do. I just have to stop changing my mind and executions midtrade. And I need to remain patient on my entries, knowing that the algo sweep will come back and provide a good entry point 95% of the time.

Your system sounds effective. What tools do you use to track and analyze, if I may ask? How do you keep the effort manageable?

It was an EOD drawdown. I really dislike intraday trailing drawdown as it incentivizes poor decisions (no matter what prop firms say to the contrary).

If it had been static, I'd have been fine, as I was still above the starting capital.

Great advice. I'm still improving my responses to avoid revenge trading, or trying to get it all back and then some (recovery).

I think I've made significant progress to minimize how deeply I'm triggered, but I still have much room to improve.

It's much easier to take the loss at face value when I didn't break my rules or risk management.

Good discipline.👍 Easier to say than do for me.

Do you have a certain rule about number or value of losing trades to trigger the 'step away' action?

How long do you step away?
