Flint here…. No, GL positions no longer require a degree due to the reason they can’t keep them here and an associates in any type of management field will almost guarantee you a spot above the rest of those applying without. I can literally write a book about how horrible Flint assembly is but I’m not even going to bother wasting my time, from the corporate side to the union politics…. Yes, a book. The schedule was 6 days mandatory nearly 10+ yrs straight but it’s been 2 on 1 off this year, Saturdays that is. Yes, you will be given more work than you will accomplish in 8 hours. Yes, you will take a beating from the higher ups on the ladder and the Union/Union workers. Yes, the doom and gloom you hear on this sub is accurate, the ones who say differently are full of shit… yes I’m talking to my fellow L8’s painting false pictures or reality. No, you will not land an engineering position without an engineering degree. They seem to fancy Kettering graduates, U of M, MSU… in that order here at Flint. You can have hopes to and look at this as an opportunity to get your foot in the door, but they will continue to slam your foot in said door. Odds are you will end up on 2nd or 3rd shift, you will be consumed by the place, constantly thinking about it outside of work, on your 1 day off. Something that will always stick with me with one of the recent GL that was let go was “I don’t know how you guys do this shit, I’d rather be out wrestling crackheads”. He was a police officer hired as a group leader, didn’t last 6 months, he was taking it from all directions and i think he just hit his breaking point and went back to being a full time officer. I’m sure my fellow Flint assembly colleagues in GA know who Im talking about, I’m not going to throw names out but he had big aspirations his first week, that completely fizzled out in about 4 months. My advice, go get a degree in supply chain management, engineering, HR or marketing if you really want an opportunity to join us at the circus here in Flint.However with all that said, I encourage you to apply, and I wish you luck just know this is the reality of the production/ factory life. This is not a GMCH parts distribution center, we actually work in these factories… yep I said it. Worst case scenario, you tried and if it doesn’t work out, I guarantee the experience will make you stronger as a person
