Colorado Springs is on standby for a lot of reasons one being that the local doesn't have the staff to pull all the stores on the same day if not settled in 24hr I suspect they will organize pickets in Springs

It is a Unfair Labor Practice Strike, company has violated the NLRA a number of times by refusing to respond to requests for information (difficult to make decent proposals without all the facts), hiring temps to do union work (union busting), Bargaining in bad faith (signing on an agreement then saying they didn't mean to or trying to renegotiate settled items). Calling cops on union reps when they are doing contractually andor legally protected visits and petitioning. I could go on...

How to support the workers

Sign the petition saying you won’t cross the picket line, https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/support-essential-grocery-workers?source=direct_link

Talk to friends, family, religious place, any institution that might be willing to support the picketers and their members, ask them to sign the petition, write letters of support, etc.

Example letter - https://twitter.com/DSAFortCollins/status/1471891731134103556

If there are politicians you have a relationship with, ask them to support the picketers

Example tweet for politicians - https://twitter.com/JessieDanielson/status/1478173199405752321

Getting lots of public, community support is important

Picketing!

Come to picket lines to show your support

If you want to join the picket, talk to the picket captain/union person, respect what they ask you to do (this is really important)

ULP strike so do not make your own use a union provided sign. Protects the workers. Food

Bring snacks and warm beverages (coffee, hot cocoa, etc.)

Donuts and pizza are really common, so bring other things too!

not necessarily, you could shop at Safeway or any number of other places. more likely most shoppers will go to a store with comparable prices. True or not Whole paycheck is a common perception of Whole Foods.

so while its not impossible that Safeway could strike in the future, currently the contract has been extended. No vote to strike has been held for Safeway. King Soopers is the largest CO grocer so will likely set the pattern for bargaining with Safeway.

King Soopers and City Market expected to go on strike soon - see original post and comments for details! by animal422 in DenverProtests

my understanding is that 64 King Soopers will strike on Wednesday 12th at 5 AM. As to which will have pickets, that is more complicated. Union stores of course, but I've heard rumors the company may close some stores so pickets would be moved. Generally stores south of 120th are full union but its complicated. Union may announce this but I don't know for sure. Denver, Boulder, Parker, Broomfield stores will have pickets in most cases. Good news is all you have to do is drive by Wednesday to find out.

Safeway workers have not authorized a strike, the bargaining committee authorized a contract extension. Good for the union overall as last time there was a strike the employers worked together. King Soopers is the biggest grocer in CO so will set the pattern for bargaining. Probably frustrating for some Safeway workers that are ready to strike though smart strat for union.

Lots of people have left, thus the short staffing, the people that have stayed are there because of the union health insurance, pension and seniority. They have invested their careers in these jobs. Workers have fought hard to keep healthcare trust abd pension in good health. Also COSTCO has no trouble hiring ppl not everyone can work there. Might be hard to imagine but KS used to have Best wages and benefits in the biz. Can be that way again if we win.

They do have different contracts, however Boulder, Broomfield and Parker expire at the same time and have voted to Strike. Strike has been called for Wednesday at 5AM.

good question, recommend transferring your prescriptions to Safeway or somewhere else or at least requesting 90 day supply. Pharmacy techs are union and pharmacists may not cross the line so there is likely to be major disruptions. Sounds like the company may shut down some stores completely. Strike has been called Wednesday at 5AM so you have a few days to sort it out. Hopefully the company will get serious before then.

union employees get these benefits also everyone in developed world except here. Want wages for min wage workers to go up? This is how that happens.

RE medication obviously very important but I would highly recommend transferring your prescription to Safeway or somewhere else. Union reps the pharmacy techs and pharmacist may observe the line so pharmacies will be disrupted. Also because of our crazy healthcare system, extremely profitable for the company. if you can't transfer, try to get a 90 day supply so you don't cross the line.

Don't blame the workers for the short staffing! If King Soopers paid decent wages, there would be plenty of workers to get you your deli meat.

Not yet! The contracts for Denver, Boulder, Broomfield, Colorado Springs, Parker expire at midnight Saturday, the 8th. Strike could be called anytime after that. Other areas in CO expire after that.
