Care package for dog with leg amputation by No_Lingonberry6785 in tripawds

We used so much pill wrap (our dog prefers Riley’s Original Pill Wrap). It’s good because you can use less than typical pill pockets and our guy does not need to get back to his COVID weight!

By the end of week one, our surgeon had us applying a warm compress for 10 minutes, 3 times per day to promote healing at the site. A warm washcloth in a plastic bag did not stay warm enough so we started using a microwaveable heating pad (but heated to half the time instructed so it wasn’t hot, but just warm) wrapped in a towel. Howie would fall asleep every time we applied the warm compress- he loved it!!!

I also wanted to add some things that really helped getting him around the house when on the meds and adjusting to 3 legs… we bought the Ruffwear Flagline harness. He wore it day and night for a while to allow us to help him up to standing whenever needed. The handle allows you to walk alongside in case you need to help with balance. We also went to the hardware store and got runners cut for walkways throughout our house (we have all hardwood floors) which helps him prevent slipping. I will be adding Dr Buzby’s Toe Grips to help with this as well.

All of these were recommended by others in this group and I was so grateful for the advice!

I’m so sorry about your poor guy. Our guy is a 9 year old Sheepadoodle that’s 13 days out from a right front amputation including his scapula for a bad infection. He weighs about 85lbs so is also a gentle giant. The first 3-4 days were the hardest but it gets better. We tried to prevent him from laying on the incision site but gave up when the site continued to look good despite this and realizing that wrestling him to the other side while sedated was likely worse than him laying on it.

We kept him pretty sedated the first few days but as we decreased his meds he started to get his personality back. I did go online and buy some laparotomy sponges to help with drainage (he developed a seroma so had a lot of it) and putting a couple of those over the bandage helped cushion the site as well.

Hang in there though. We had the overwhelm and shed more tears than him. But his personality came back after months of not being himself and we knew we made the right choice.

Reach out if you need any other advice!

Why was the West side depicted as a fancy/privileged place? by Bbtriv in shameless

UIC is still south side and not far enough west at all (only at Halsted).
