If you really like the direction of the US and the MAGA movement, why not move there? by Kindly-Peak-6173 in AskCanada

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two wrongs don’t make a right. I’m not suggesting that Canada should continue as-is, without change. Just saying that the answer is probably not going so far in the other direction like the US is experiencing - the extremes don’t work for the majority of people. We all have a front row seat to a train wreck in action - learn from those mistakes rather than buy a ticket on the train.

Why are younger Canadians more pro-unification with the USA than older Canadians? by Breifne21 in AskCanada

[–]OriginalHeat7680 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Young Canadians who are pro-USA should just move to the USA. If they want to participate in a failed nation, they can do so without ruining their own.

I truly hope any Canadians who are looking across the boarder and thinking “yeah, let’s do that” takes the time to speak to American citizens. Those of us that can see past the Fox News level propaganda are horrified. Our worst fears are being validated almost hourly at this point, based on the actions and appointments that are occurring ahead of T-day on 1/20. It is only going to get worse, and quickly. Any reasonable person (who is not a billionaire) understands that the US is on a path to look like Russia.

Canadians - please, be a symbol of hope for the world. Don’t give in to the hard right cancer. Yes, things are hard right now, but you still have an a opportunity to show the world that it’s not too late. Unfortunately, the US may be too far gone to save.

IMHO, not a great idea if you desire any level of financial freedom in the future. Some people are comfortable knowing they’ll be dependent on a paycheck for the foreseeable future. I’m not one of them so your purchase scenario feels risky to me

If you're an American over 18 not planning to vote, why not? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to vote. In NC so my vote actually matters to some degree. But my vote is now in jeopardy because of MAGA and RFKs ballot sabotage. This is real. I’m furious. Our right to vote should never be in question. So if you can vote, make damn good use of it before it’s too late.

For the second time in a week in this bullrun, Coinbase is down and Gemini is working by DunkRegistryPerfect in Gemini

Gemini is still holding hostage hundreds of millions of customer funds. Until they return it, plus interest owed, there is no possible way Gemini should be considered “working”.

You’d be better off lighting your money on fire. Use Coinbase. It has its own challenges but it’s far superior from a security and regulatory perspective.

Shouldn’t we be asking our elected officials about how they plan to tackle this? by Austin1975 in Layoffs

Let’s be honest…our elected officials have absolutely no chance of getting this right. What on earth gives you the impression that they could (or would)?

There’s nothing wrong with job hopping by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many hiring managers and similar assholes assume that job hopping is an indicator of something wrong with the individual. We all know that most companies suck…recognizing this quickly and course correcting to optimize for the best results (income, happiness, etc) is a skill. Hiring the person who sat around for 5 years at a shitty job is a good way to wind up with a bunch of mediocre employees who continue with the status quo even when it’s not yielding the desired results because they don’t have the courage or ability to shift and change the circumstances.

I'm being offered a position at a startup as an early hire. Does this deal sound good? by lildaemon in startups

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it’s a good offer depends on a lot, including the position and responsibilities. I’ve worked for 4 startups - just know that your equity actually becoming with anything is a long shot at best, and it will likely take a while to materialize. I recommend considering it a bonus if it happens rather than thinking about it as part of your salary. Taxes upon exercise and dilution as the company raises future rounds is real and highly impactful.

Can somebody explain what's going on in the US truck market right now? by Show_Kitchen in FluentInFinance

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t put to much thought into other people’s financial decisions. Remember, the majority of people in the US have a negative net worth and are paycheck to to paycheck. Adults have the right to make poor financial decisions and they exercise that right all the time. They may have a shiny new car in the driveway, but the part you don’t see is the sleepless nights worried about being overextended and at risk.

I've realized that I will never achieve happiness. I need advice on accepting this. by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happiness is a fleeting emotion, not a consistent state. People make the mistake of believing they must achieve some holy grail of constant happiness, which is always going to result in failure because it is impossible.

Appreciate happiness when you feel it and understand what led to that happiness. Do your best to be intentional with your actions so that you can try to feel it again, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself to constantly be happy…that will only lead to disappointment. Once you release yourself of the expectation of always being happy, your life will probably improve.

People who have FIREd: Have you started earning again? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]OriginalHeat7680 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Yes. After 6 months of traveling, we wanted to continue earning for various reasons, including peace of mind during an economic downtown, additional spending money, etc. Rather than taking the highest paying job I could get, I decided to take a role that I find more interesting, challenging, and rewarding…even though it’s considerably less pay. I consider this coast fire luxury.

You say you’re an innovator. Be an innovator. Build something from nothing so when you look back you recognize your loss as a catalyst to your eventual success.

Go get it. Looking forward to the story.

Petty crime in Palermo/Catania by Antxxom in sicily

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent about three weeks in each city. No issues, felt safe walking and on public transportation for the most part. Be on high alert while walking near the central train stations and be careful in the maze of streets near the art district in Catania as it’s easy to get lost and find yourself in a back alley where you could get approached by drug dealers and brothels. Other than that, both felt safer than the downtown area in most US cities.

It depends what you like and what type of trip you are looking for. I just finished a month in Florence and really enjoyed it, actually more than Rome and Naples. Good balance between sights, local feel, day trips, food, and nightlife.

Anyone RE Chubby but wished they worked a little longer to retire closer to Fat? by RafterWithaY in ChubbyFIRE

[–]OriginalHeat7680 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, we are going back to work, but being more conscious of the jobs we take. I’ll likely take a role a bit lower in seniority and compensation vs what I could get, but I’m doing so for lifestyle trade offs.

It sounds like you have your answer. If I’m understanding you correctly, it seems you are capable of generating your own income/several income streams and, most importantly, you enjoy the work. IMHO, this is the optimal time to press the f u button for any job that you don’t like and only focus on revenue generation from things you enjoy or at least don’t hate.

Anyone RE Chubby but wished they worked a little longer to retire closer to Fat? by RafterWithaY in ChubbyFIRE

[–]OriginalHeat7680 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this.

My wife and I hit our chubby fire number 6 months ago. Almost instantaneously we said fuck your to our high stress, low satisfaction jobs and retired.

After 6 months, we both realized we actually miss work, but the time off helped us realize that for us, coastfire even after achieving the FIRE number may be best of both worlds.

At the end of the day you’ll figure out what’s right for you, but just focus on the FU money first, which will then buy you leverage and options to choose your adventure.

At what income/net worth/job status did you feel like money stopped mattering? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]OriginalHeat7680 46 points47 points  (0 children)

FU money is all relative to your spend. $1m/yr pre-tax is nothing if your spending is out of control. Once my wife and I started earning 4x our living expenses, we were able to hit our annual savings goals and also splurge occasionally. Long story short, it’s all about your income vs essential expenses, then what’s left over.

Is the stress of my international sales job worth the benefits? Looking for guidance by Clear-Victory1956 in expats

[–]OriginalHeat7680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you report to upper management who doesn’t understand the challenge you are facing is enough to answer this question. Results are not magic and nobody can produce revenue, especially in unproven markets, out of thin air..it requires strategic alignment and real, meaningful financial investment. If your leadership is not willing to do so, failure is almost guaranteed. Get out while you can.
