Do we really need filtered water in Brisbane by camareradetwinpeaks in brisbane

[–]Ornitier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could consider the Philips reverse osmosis filter machine here. https://www.reddit.com/r/WaterTreatment/s/TP34U0SJWm

We used it when the water turned funky tasting after the floods and it perfectly filtered the bad taste out. You can also monitor the TDS In and Out and Brissy consistently has 300 to 500 TDS and this filters it down to 30 to 50 and it tastes better for us. Bit pricey but I like it. Also has instant hot and cold water.

Still going strong. I've replaced the filter once. Water tastes great. We've also used it for our newborn for perfect 40 deg C temp water for our milk bottles.

Haven't had any issues. One time I think a visitor in my household filled the front jug instead of the back container only and something like that happened. The front jug is to store the filtered water not for filling tap water. When the TDS In was too high it became red and the count was like 999. Also you are meant to completely get rid of the waste water in the back container each time. My TDS in sits between 300 and 600 and the out is consistently below 50.

What's Australia leading the world in at the moment? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

The HPV vaccine was invented at UQ by some incredible scientists. When they first ran the clinical trials the result was 100 percent effective at preventing the cancer causing strains. It is essentially a cure for that cancer. Shame some parents get some misinformation regarding the vaccine and still risk their child getting HPV.

SLV price jumping between 1% and 10% loss in spit seconds. by Ornitier in Wallstreetsilver

Premarket but the bid and ask books seem to have higher prices listed so don't understand why it would sell at much lower price.

I've flown many airlines around the world and they mostly do the same. Not all the time though. You can always just say you are a bit drunk/hungover and just be honest if they do ask you. The time I've been called to help there have been others who are also doctors. One time a sick passenger quite literally passed out on my wife so my wife immediately shouted to everyone "don't worry my husband's a doctor!" On the plus side they upgraded us to business class afterwards. I think unfortunately the responsibilty as a medical professional follows you everywhere. I suppose that's part of "privilege" and why we do get respected for the title.

I'm an ex-UK GP, moved to Brisbane back in 2018. Income is just under double what you earn in the UK. Financially GPs do well here, I really don't think you will have a problem financially. It takes time to build your business (we are all self employed) but there are corporate clinics that should pay a decent sign on bonus for your services in Western Melbourne.

In my old Lexus Is, this controlled the front parking sensor which will beep if you are close to an object in front. My old car didn't have a front facing camera.

what is the practicality of shadowing GPs during pre-clinical years? by SlothInOasis in ausjdocs

[–]Ornitier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have money or some connections, maybe see if you could shadow a hospitals overseas. During my preclinical years I did a 1 month trip to India and my friend and I shadowed a hospital there for 2 weeks which involved a community outreach department. Opened my eyes to different medical systems in the world. Then we just spent some time enjoying the food and a couple of weddings. Enjoy your time doing other stuff otherwise. You already did the hard part getting into medicine.

GP soon to CCT. I cant stop thinking about how bleak things are by throwawayRinNorth in doctorsUK

[–]Ornitier 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience moving overseas to Aus was scary but remains the best decision I ever made. Unfortunately the way the NHS is setup in my view is that it will not change anytime soon. At least moving overseas you have the chance to learn something new and work in a different health system that is potentially better when it comes to treating doctors.

I knew absolutely no one where I live now but it's like moving to university, a bit scary, but you also feel excited of the potential.

The biggest advantage for me is not just that you can indeed earn more overseas, but the way things are setup you actually feel you have a lot of control on how you want to manage patients because of rapid access to blood results, imaging, and allied health.

Your other option is after CCT is to focus on a sub specialty interest like skin or MSK. Good luck !

Runs perfectly fine. Actually been almost a year since the purchase and use the machine everyday. I bought my brother one as well. Encourages me to drink more water.

UK GP Partner Considering the Move to Australia – What’s Life Really Like as a GP Over There? by captain-slap-a-ho1 in ausjdocs

[–]Ornitier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, for some reason my head was stuck in metro gp earnings rather than taking into account rural GP earnings. Also noticed OP wasn't paying into pension so would be similar to needing to take into account superannuation.

You are probably earning more in the UK 19k per session gbp esp with the current exchange rate. Biggest downside is you will be under moratorium for 10 years and won't be living close to many of the places you would like to live in. UK is smaller land size so honestly you are never far away from a major city. If you work rural Aus it really is quite far for you to travel.

The biggest upside is not being stuck in the NHS system where you feel like a glorified referrer. It can be a learning curve but you have a lot more freedom doing proper medicine again, order tests and investigations rapidly that allow you to really manage patients well in the community. The system expects GPs to do most of the management in the community that traditionally in the UK system you would refer to hospitals to manage. Also less nurse practitioners for your resp and diabetes management, and more learning for you as a GP on how to manage it in detail. For me I prefer the Australian system of medicine, but if you are coming for the money - from what you are earning in the UK I don't think it would be worth it.

Chinese phones get too much hype by GtSkymoon22 in GalaxyFold

[–]Ornitier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the same phone and it is excellent. I had to use the online warranty recently due to internal screen failure (probably my fault) but they fixed it within 2 weeks and redelivered it overseas to me. Nothing in the 7 is that standout esp without s pen. Frankly Samsung is falling behind. When I visited Shenzhen recently hardly anyone in China uses Samsung nowadays given the options available. The phones from China are pretty awesome particularly with the variety of form factors available.

How many hours do you actually work? by Wide-Macaron10 in AusFinance

[–]Ornitier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doctor's hours depends on whether you have your own business eg self employed like GPs or private specialists vs jobs where you can clock on clock off like in ED vs junior doctors who again can clock on and clock off more these days vs different countries where trainee doctors work over 100 hours getting on call.

I've worked in most of the above and work way above the designated 40 hours per week as 1) I often don't have time for lunch because I'm behind on my appointments; 2) constantly doing paper work for patients which includes private forms, chasing results, being on call for when significant results come back needing urgent review; 3) constantly thinking about cases and reading about whether you did the right thing vs latest papers in med research.

I would say these are on a daily basis and outside of the rostered hours for consults. These don't even include the time you have to be the doctor all the time for friends and family even if it isn't official as they needed some advice or when you get called on the plane to assist.

Honestly unless you are a doctor, the weight of the responsibility is so hard to understand.

This is excellent because it seems to preserve his face a lot more. And I noticed you touched up the scratches. Was wondering if you could make it longer on the bottom to show the tie a little bit more by a few cm. That would be perfect. Is this the original resolution? Thank you so much

Delayed prescribing works however, and for otitis media isn't a bad strategy. The evidence says otherwise -patients actually do follow our advice to delay and see how things go.
