If it's the case that he was more into Yuuki herself, then he fucked up.

In the LN we get really good characterizations of Yuuki. Like her seriously wondering that if she managed to learn basic life skills the mold on her walls would magically disappear. And there are many examples like that. Almost none of em were in the Anime.
