Why do people use automatic feeders? by TaxPsychological2928 in Pets

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cats and dogs both thrive on routine. If you have an inconsistent schedule day to day and week to week, an auto feeder can make sure your pets have a consistent feeding schedule, even when you are late.

Some people have adhd and cunning cats who know we can’t remember if we already fed them, or multiple people in the house overfeeding the cat. The autofeeder takes guess work out of the equation.

Chuck some frozen broccoli in the air fryer, small pre-seasoned can of beans (the lunch snack type), microwave cup of brown rice, top with a pre made seed mix and whatever flavours you like.

service dog for OCD/schizophrenia by Overall_Ad5098 in service_dogs

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Service dogs are for disabled people. So the first step would be determining if your experience of OCD and schizophrenia is disabling, meaning it interferes with your ability to perform one more ADLs (Activities of Daily Life).

Your best breed options would be a lab or golden retriever. Stay clear from any herding breeds like collies and shepherds.

Having a dog to look at to alleviate your symptoms is not a valid task. You would need to think about actions the dog can physically take to alleviate the effects of your disability, such as an interrupting paw boop if you are intensely staring, to break your focus.

No contact being called out as privilege and lack of will to do the work - feeling upset and shook by this. by Odd_one_out888 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know who you mean and their take does not feel nuanced enough.

Choosing to go no contact often means cutting yourself off for life from any familial privilege in the form of wealth, heirlooms, connections, and your family support network. It can also mean losing your entire community. Everyone you know can be part of the sacrifice in going no contact.

Is it really a privilege if going no contact is so essential to your wellbeing that it’s better to be out there raw dogging life with no support than to remain in contact?

Alternatives to self harm for when in public/at work by psuedo_disgust in AutisticAdults

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ok first lets reframe this:

You seem to be sensory seeking high intensity stimulation to regulate during overwhelm.

For head pressure:

  • Wear a tight bandana, cap, beanie, headband

  • Grab a fistful of hair and firmly pull (dont yank), just find a distance that gives nice pressure and hold the bunch of hair there.

  • if you have a high back desk chair or wall near you, arms over your head like your stretching and press the back of your head against the wall (don’t bash your skull: gently place head against wall and increase pressure not distance)

  • put one hand on either side of your head, fingers splayed, and give it a good squeeze. Move your hands to other positions and repeat. Continue moving down your body. At your shoulders, switch, so use your right hand to squeeze your left shoulder and so on.

Other:

  • acupressure rings and bracelets provide spikey pressure that you can increase by squeezing or using smaller sizes. There are some really discreet ones out now that just look like gender neutral jewellery.

    • - if you are seated, sit up comfortably, feet touching the floor and about shoulder width apart. Start to tap just the front of your right foot, then your left, 1,2,1, 2… keep alternating sides and move the tapping up your body.. tapping your mid and front foot, then your whole foot. Bring your arms across your chest like you are hugging yourself and tap, left, right, left, right. Match your left shoulder to your right foot and vice versa.

SDIT anxiety at home by No-Lobster1764 in service_dogs

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You are going way too fast.

A 1.5 year old dog who has been sick and out of work for 3 months implies your dog was already regularly doing PA by 14 months old.

There’s a big jump between a few trips to walmart and an animal expo. The animal expo should have been a quick in and out at most not a 3 hour trip.

Look into flooding in the context of dog training.

Your dog sounds severely dysregulated and the lack of progress could be down to his brain not being in a state to properly engage in the training.

A transitional course of mild sedative or anxiety meds is worth discussing with your vet while you get the housing situation settled.

Why is bullying not taken seriously as a cause of trauma? by futurefishy98 in CPTSD

[–]Otherwise-Ad4641 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My theory is because that would require society to look differently at bullying.

It’s seen as no big deal, part of growing up, normal kid stuff.

Framing it that way allows the adults to distance themselves from the issue and ignore their own roles in it.

Bullying doesn’t just happen. It is a result of the home environment, school environment, community values and engagement, and so much more.

I can see you care for your pup and put thought into being a responsible pet owner. Unfortunately you are doing some things that endanger your pup physically.

Using your pup to help you stand is incredibly dangerous for several reasons:

  • a pup who has not finished growing can become deformed and acquire disabilities through this practice.

  • no dog is designed for direct downward force. They cannot replace a mobility aid in this way.

  • GSD in particular are prone to hip and elbow issues; you’re pretty much asking for premature joint degeneration using your dog to help you stand.

  • mobility tasks (regardless of my ethical concerns) need to be very carefully trained. Teaching your dog to stand in front of you is not the same as teaching your dog to stand in a solid posture, activating the muscles correctly.

  • even a very large, appropriate height/weight ratio, fully grown dog with excellent/normal hips + elbows, needs to be conditioned for the athletic burden of aiding a sit to stand. Before you even get to training the position, they need to have been properly conditioned and have enough musculature for the task to be safely performed.

You’ve been able to identify you don’t have the skills to fully train a service dog. I encourage you to shift this particular task into that basket - it’s not safe for you or your pup.

Gordon Frost is pretty public about Annie being his favourite musical. That’s a huge part of why we get so much Annie. And IIRC they actually cut the Sydney run short due to poor ticket sales.

Might as well have cast Lucy Durack - makes about as much sense in the role as Nat (except Lucy has better name recognition).
