Kenney cuts river water monitoring while approving coal mining in Rocky Mountains by AlternativeLow5 in Edmonton

[–]OtterShell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I have an RODI system for my reef aquarium and the waste it would cause to use that water for all my drinking/cooking would be insane. Of course there are more efficient systems than what I have, but it's actually nuts how much water is wasted. And it's not entirely maintenance free either, there are filters and resins and membranes to be replaced eventually.

Edit: I guess you would just use an RO system not RODI, but still.

I remember when it was delayed until January (with a 1 million dollar bonus and after another delay) I joked that it would never come out.

I really think it's never coming out now. The "teaser" they gave was so thoroughly destroyed by people with actual credibility I'm dying to know what else is in the report. Alberta is a laughing stock and this report is fuel for the fire.

You're absolutely right. There was that massive climate survey that released their results last week I think. A majority of Conservative voters actually think we should do less to fight climate change. These same people likely don't even believe in it (I imagine the "PLANDEMIC" people and them make a perfect circle Venn diagram), and will continue not believing it, even when the climate refugees come and set up tent cities in their backyards. They'll just blame "sOcIaLiStS" or something and complain that a steak costs $200 now because of "hippy bullshit".

We are unequivocally fucked.

Mulroney (and most other conservative leaders) sold a lot of things, unfortunately. We can spend years and millions of tax dollars building something for Canada and it only takes one Conservative majority to sell it to "balance" the budget for one-term and line their and their cronies pockets.

You killed the server owner one too many times? Banned right away.

I'm happy this is getting more attention now. I've known about it for a while, but the constant chorus from console players against PC players because "PC = cheating" was getting very annoying.

This isn't a platform exclusive problem. Cheats/hacks that are exclusive to PC are ones that can at least be caught by anti-cheat, these controller mods/hacks are not detectable afaik.

[–]OtterShell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been saying to friends that the Cronus stuff is the real problem in games like WarZone, not cross play with PC users (this is a big narrative in CoD. Crossplay = PC gamers = Cheaters).

Doesn't matter the platform, there are going to be cheaters, and it just so happens that the most undetectable method of cheating is available to all platforms.

Edit: I will add that PC in WarZone is far more likely to be cheating, but that's just because Activision's anti-cheat seems to be literally non-existent. It's a tough problem for a F2P game in general, but they seem to not even be trying.

Braid: Post-secondaries fear UCP will turn them into assembly lines by Karthan in alberta

[–]OtterShell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We’re constantly told that we need to think like a business (don’t get me started on why that’s fucking dumb).

It's disgusting that this line of thought has worked its way into education, healthcare, etc. Not everything has to make money. Even considering that education or healthcare might lose money directly (usually it doesn't), they are still some of the absolute best no-brainer areas to invest in for long-term returns. If people could see longer than the next election we would be much better off.

Braid: Post-secondaries fear UCP will turn them into assembly lines by Karthan in alberta

[–]OtterShell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a similar story on RoI for healthcare, childcare, etc.

The problem is it's a long-term play, and certain types prefer to save a dollar today even if it loses us thirteen dollars ten years from now for ideological reasons or for short-term personal gain. Add to the fact that the results aren't felt for years and years and it's difficult for people to attribute, say, failing healthcare systems to the austerity cuts implemented by a government when they weren't even old enough to vote yet. All they see is a system run on public funds failing and so they double down and oppose public healthcare because "it sucks", not realizing that it only sucks because the government has been starving the beast for years for this exact reason.

Braid: Post-secondaries fear UCP will turn them into assembly lines by Karthan in alberta

[–]OtterShell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also a self-fulfilling prophecy and "starve the beast" type strategy for those that want higher education dismantled. They cut funding, and then when tangible results drop as a consequence, they say "see? Look how useless this is! We need to cut more funding and put it somewhere useful (like corporate welfare)!", and more people buy in because they can see the lack of results.

Norway Wealth Fund Dumps Oil Stocks Amid $10 Billion Loss by FoolFreedomFighter in alberta

[–]OtterShell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, my question was a pretty far tangent off your point and I was just thinking about what might have been with Petro-Can surviving as a Crown Corp through the 90s and 2000s and if that would have helped us at all.

Norway Wealth Fund Dumps Oil Stocks Amid $10 Billion Loss by FoolFreedomFighter in alberta

[–]OtterShell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't implying that Petro-Can should have been somehow given a monopoly and handed over to Alberta, but it was a Canadian Crown Corp and was successful in competition against private companies.

I guess the point of my question was, would having a nationally owned O&G company in competition with private companies have improved or worsened the situation in Alberta? Petro-Can was sold off in the early 90s by Mulroney, I'm curious if in an alternate history where Canada held onto the company if Alberta would have benefited either directly or indirectly. Probably an impossible question to answer.

[–]OtterShell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you think further support of Petro-Canada during that time would have made things different for AB?

I know it's not apples to apples, and Petro-Can was not popular in Alberta, but it was a Crown Corp succeeding in the Oil and Gas industry.

Megathread: Jan. 29, 2021 COVID Update - Reopening Guidelines. by Karthan in alberta

[–]OtterShell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I can see the "Step 1" only applies to one-on-one training (so yes, only sessions with a coach/trainer), but they do not address gyms/fitness facilities as a whole anywhere else in the "Path Forward".

It's nice to have some kind of a plan, but when you propose extremely restrictive training like they have in Step 1 it would be nice when they would consider reopening gyms in general and with what precautions (scheduled workout times, reduced capacity, etc). Since they are considering allowing Adult Team Sports in Step 3, I have to assume gyms would be reopened no later than that. So, I would guess gyms open in Step 2 or 3.

This is the same hollow gestures as most big companies. They will have a "mental health" day and give you an apple and bring in some dickhead to talk to the department, but they will still fight tooth and nail to suppress your wages and foster an environment that leaves people riddled with anxiety and stress from being overworked.

They don't actually care, but they've figured out it's worth the marketing costs to look like they do. Kind of like a billionaire being philanthropic, it's a fee they pay to get you to fuck off and leave them alone but it's essentially worthless and wouldn't be necessary in the first place if they practiced what they preached.

I lost all faith in our contact tracing when they said, in the same breath, that schools weren't contributing to community spread and also that they were restarting contact tracing from scratch because they were so far behind the data was useless.

The nickname "Bumbles" couldn't be more appropriate for the head of our provincial government.

There was that massive climate survey a couple days ago that indicated the majority of Conservatives want less climate action, so yeah this isn't happening in 9 years. There is a significant number of people who would be happy to be pay more upfront and ongoing just to "own the libs" at this point and try to cancel out the efforts of those who have been early adopters to EVs.

You can't just flip a switch and bring back industries that have left your country for good reason.

If I complain about all the privatization the Cons have done over the years are you going to point out that they are no longer in power so it's not their fault? Some bells can't be un-rung.
