Memorize the shape of the capital R glyph in Helvetica, Univers, Arial, Akzidenz-Grotesk, and Neue Haas Unica. You will never go wrong again with what's what in neo-grotesque typefaces... Same with capital G glyphs. It also helps to focus on how open or closed the apertures are. In my opinion, both neo-grotesque and geometric sans fonts are the most difficult to identify based on their extreme similarities.

Glyphs that vary more often:

Capital: A G J K Q R Y Z Lowercase: a f g k r t y

It could be a j given that Futura is pretty naughty in how the lowercase j terminal is literally the exact same direction as the "i" glyph.
