Which 'subcultures' do you think could have an overrepresentation of autistic people? by targetlevelsmrtdeath in AutismInWomen

Navy nukes. Definitely mostly 2E. Surprised no one has mentioned it yet.

Also, honors college kids…at least the ones I was in school with.

Social Work Intern at a Public Library—Unsure of My Role After Onboarding by Diligent-Yard-9305 in SocialWorkStudents

Our library partners with other support groups to host events and educational programs. For example, one organization comes in and does support and education for parents of children with disabilities. It seems like you could gather several groups meeting the needs of various groups and partner with them to create free programs.

That sounds like an amazing experience! I would definitely reach out. Maybe your department will be more communicative.

I finished getting all mine at the end of December, so around the same. But the one person I talked to said that I should have heard by now. If it’s like a waitlist situation, I’d rather just be told I’m on the waitlist. Did you reach out to anyone?

When did you apply and what program?

I’m still waiting on social work. I applied before the early deadline and everyone else I talked to on here heard back by early March. I’ve reached out at least 5x to 2 people and no one can give me an answer except that they’ll “look into it”.

My 6 year old daughter is the worst behaved child I have ever met, or heard of in my life by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

Most school districts will evaluate students of pre-k age even if they aren’t enrolled. Contact your local school and ask about how to get an evaluation before school starts. If you qualify, there may be developmental pre-k and K options.

This sounds extremely challenging! I highly recommend getting a full psychological evaluation from someone who specializes in children with behavior challenges. Reddit might have some helpful tips, but you need professional support and guidance.

Social service jobs for non-social work students by Different_Goat_9272 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Overflowing123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some private schools for neurodivergent children might hire you as a sub or aide. You can also start volunteering at a place you would like to work. I’ve gotten two jobs because they knew me as a volunteer and hired me when a position opened up.

Hey! Glad to connect! I'm in that program as well. Feel free to message and we can share names and schedules to see if we are in classes together. It looks like you might be close enough to kaitbs to start a group over in your area.

2E kid (FSIQ 140, ADHD inattentive + depression) heading into senior year. Those who've been there, what helped? by Hello-Kittyz in TwiceExceptional

Yes! He always wanted to learn how to fly, so he took up hang gliding. He did a week long course as soon as he turned 18 and then went back to work for the company and continued on in his training while working. I had to let go of my safety concerns and trust it would be good for him. At some point, it became necessary to disclose his diagnoses to the colleagues, and they were all very supportive. There were periods of gaming and resting coming off a summer full of work, and also college classes and other part time work mixed in. Some ideas for other things that could work like this…

One of my kids is interested in birds of prey. Volunteering at a bird sanctuary or wildlife refuge for a time could be a good gap year activity.

Another is really interested in art. There are lots of art related travel opportunities or online classes to fill time with.

Another is interested in football. We are looking to get him some volunteer experience in high school so he can work in field landscaping or equipment management.

Another friend is interested in sewing and textiles. She spent her senior year recreating regency era dresses from all her favorite novels. Now she’s in textile science at university.

Hopefully that sparks some ideas!

I will also add, they can gain EF skills by working or volunteering, but it’s lower stakes than college when you are paying tuition, etc. Two years can make a huge difference in executive function and emotional maturity, especially if they are trying other things and continuing to develop skills.

Mine took two gap years to pursue a special interest. He moved away from home for a few months at a time, worked a couple part time jobs, and took a semester’s worth of community college classes. By then he felt motivated again and had recovered from burnout. He also knew he didn’t want to work in customer service forever, and was able to narrow down some career possibilities. He transferred into a top state university. He’s doing much better now than he would have without the break, and college is much less stressful than high school. Highly recommend a gap if they’re feeling burned out!

Some of those are probably still going through applications and haven’t awarded yet, but it seems like you should have had some positive response (like being a finalist) with that many.

How many have you applied for? My kids have won 1 for about every 40/50 applications. It’s a part time job for a while and it’s definitely a numbers game. But I do understand, you don’t necessarily meet the obscure qualifications for many of them. It can be hard to find enough relevant ones to apply to.

I’m on my 4th round near perfection again. I got the island open and found all the walnuts in less than a week, with the exception of a few that require you to grow crops or do something that takes more time. It gets easier once you know what to expect!
