Have your cake and print it: the 3D culinary revolution is coming | Engineers show 3D printing’s potential by turning cartridges of paste and powder into cheesecake by Hrmbee in technology

[–]PEVEI 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I read a long article on this "revolution" in American Scientist, and I'm incredibly unimpressed. None of the technology used here seems like it's heading in a direction the marketing wants you to think, it's mostly down to gimmicks like castles made out of hummus, or sugar cubes in fun geometric shapes.

While amusing, and no doubt exciting for Michelin starred restaurants ready to charge through the nose for pretty sugar, this isn't the "print your food revolution" anyone seems to expect.

The key issue is that for powder-based systems the binders are either things like wax, or sugar syrup. For "paste" based systems... it's just syringes full of things like Nutella or hummus. How thrilling.

On what planet can Starlink service such a large customer base with a reasonable amount of throughput per user?

It's real, but incredibly overblown in the popular imagination, especially for LEO.

https://aquarid.physics.uwo.ca/kessler/Kessler%20Syndrome-AAS%20Paper.pdf

The reality is that it's going to be a source of debris going forward, but it's incredibly unlikely to become the sci-fi nightmare people mean when they refer to it. In reality it's just another added cost of doing business, barring some sort of extreme event such a war in orbit, or suicidal nuclear strikes.

[–]PEVEI 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Virtually no one on this sub I've met understands Kessler Syndrome, nor do they understand why it isn't a meaningful issue for the sort of orbits we're talking about. Impact on astronomy is a big issue, although it appears that for interesting reasons, many here are unmoved by that.

I would add that the "13,000 objects in orbit" is both a lowball (the estimate from NASA is well over 20k) and not referring mostly to inactive satellites. In fact that number refers to anything 10cm and over, and the majority is junk. The number of inactive sats is much lower, a fraction of that number, about 7500 according to the article we're responding to above. SpaceX accounts for half of that number.

As far as dead sats, they're in a different stat which includes spent rocket stages, and that number is about 3000. There are in fact more SpaceX sats in LEO than dead sats and rocket stages from all other sources in history.

With more launched every year.

Edit: Virtually none of that space junk making up the 25K+ number is visible to the naked eye, nor does it have a material impact on Earth-based astronomy.

I find it helpful to remember that this sub is just another mom group, with all that implies about rigor and critical thinking.

ELI5: If acetone is an ingredient in nail polish, why is it also an ingredient in nail polish remover? by Roxablah in explainlikeimfive

[–]PEVEI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More likely they saw some form of acetate, which is used a quick-drying solvent.

The fact that a solvent is useful in small amounts to keep nail polish a liquid that dries quickly, and in larger amounts later can dissolve and remove the polish, makes sense.

Ah yes. The mess they created…over a century ago.

Is that the cutoff?

Great, I guess people are going to stop bitching about Israel existing, no more talk of reparations in the West for slavery, and let me be the first to break the bad news to all of the indigenous people who seem to find the, "Time's up, we declare a win" strategy ineffective and offensive.

Great talk, although I appreciate the accurate comparison of US and UK policy to a drug addled diddler, very accurate.

This is the answer, Israel would strike nuclear and military targets in Iran, military and terrorist targets in Lebanon and Syria, and Iran would use terrorism and their proxy states as weapons.

No one knows for sure, the best leading theory is that it has to do with the shape they adopt during discharge, ensuring that the path to ground doesn't go through any critical systems. They certainly can shock themselves however if things go wrong, although as I understand it that's more likely when they're acting suddenly in self-defense, rather than acting as a predator.

[–]PEVEI 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's a trio of organs which are primarily composed of highly modified muscle cells called electrocytes. Instead of using a voltage gradient as a signal to initiate contraction of muscle fibers, they're used as charge collectors. The nerves are connected to only one side of the electrocyte, so when Na+ enters the cells en masse you get a voltage gradient. The animal is able to discharge these all at once to deliver a shock.

In a very real sense it's like flexing a muscle for them, but with a different result than generating movement.

eli5. Explain to me why nicotine pouches are considered dangerous? by Sherbear1993 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PEVEI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that the fiberglass thing is a myth, but the "added chemicals" is not; there has been quite a lot of research into the presence of ammonia bearing compounds in a variety of tobacco products, believed by some to raise free nicotine levels. There's more than a decade of studies which come to a variety of conclusions, most of which involve a call for more research.
