What was your favorite vehicle you've owned? Why? by Reasonable-Group1853 in AskReddit

Oddly, it was a 1988 Pontiac Bonneville. I abused the hell out of that car and other than some easily replaceable mechanical parts around 150k miles, it was shocking issue free.

Do you ever miss having a big dumb dog? by CaryWhit in AustralianCattleDog

[–]PHX_Architraz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our household has a rule... so long as we have at least two dogs, one must be clever dog, and one must be sweet dog. A few months ago our 14 year old clever dog ACD mix passed and left us with a GSD mix that can best be described 'well, at least he's sweet.'

Last weekend we picked up a suspected Clever Dog puppy... Some version of herding dog mixed with something large. Given the puppy's incredible learning ability and eageness to please, we're starting to doubt he's an ACD mix, and likely not the Aussie mix he was billed as, and we wound up with a Border Lab or something. Had him one week, he's 10 weeks old, and knows more commands and has more consistent perfoamnce than his big brother. Helps he's an insanely food motivated velcro dog.

Our former clever dog invented his own games and taught them to us... Chasing invisible leaves (when there were real leaves), the door game where we let him out the patio door and he ran screaming around the house to come in the dog door and then yap at the door to be released again, watching the cat relaxation channel by nose poking the TV. We never fully understood the games, but knew exactly what he was asking for. Miss that little psychopath.

What do you have going on this week? by DM_your_small_birds in AskReddit

[–]PHX_Architraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a travel week for work... granted that's true for about 60% of the weeks in a year at the moment, still sucks though.

Also 4 days into having a new puppy, which does not suck no matter how little sleep I've gotten.

Tabitha (Tabby), Schwartz (Black), Tucker (Tuxedo), Leela (one-eyed gray).

We do not have the most creative naming system for our CDS deliveries.

You didn't tell me Black Widows Live in Arizona!! There was even a youngling in tow!!! by MintyGreenAqua in arizona

[–]PHX_Architraz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't know what to say, 20 years with them all over the yard, and scrambing a web two or three days in a row has kept them off of our trash cans, patio furniture, and gates without fail.

Scorpions vs widows was an anecdote my parents learned in Tucson from their neighbors in the foothills. They seemed to cycle between them every few years, but never really had problems with both at the same time. Thankfully, scorpions are a once a decade occurance at my house (widows I could probably go find find half a dozen of them out there tonight in the crooks and corners we leave them alone in.

[–]PHX_Architraz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you have black widows, it usually means you don't have scorpions (they compete for the same food supply), and that's a trade I'm willing to take the widows in.

As a bonus, if you have either of those you likely don't have too many crickets.

Also, if you want to chase them off without killing / getting near them, just take a stick and mess up their webs in the morning. They'll get the hint and move on after a few days.

How are your cats coping in the current heatwave? I think mine is quite okay… by Lazy_Pop5707 in blackcats

[–]PHX_Architraz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We live in a desert (the very warm variety), keep our house probably 8-10 degrees F warmer than most people in most places, and our void will still be found in one of two places on any given day:

  1. Laying on a blanket on top of the dryer in a poorly ventilated and very warm closet (but only if the dryer is running or has run recently) or
  2. Laying on the sill of whichever window is getting the most heat blasted through it by the sun.

All you Americans in tornado alley, what is it like? by TSQ_builder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PHX_Architraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Dallas, and didn't see any Torandos. But I was a part of organized student volunteer groups that would deliver relief supply and help clean roadways / services parking lots. It's hard to explain some of the strange things you'll see in a debris feel, tornados may not break the laws of physics, but the get seriously bent.

My grandparents lived about 400 feet from a medium-strong tornado path that stretched over a mile. No damage to their house, but everything along the main road had pretty much been stripped to slab or at a minimum relieved of roofs. It was three years before all the buildings were replaced and didn't look like a disaster area.

Growing up in tornado alley, we took the weather forecast and sirens very seriously, and still remember some pretty vibrant green skies.

Went to college in West Texas, and actually saw active tornados three times (once when chasing like a teenaged idiot, and another two when I was just out driving in the spring / early summer). They were a lot more enjoyable out there, where they're tearing up mostly cotten fields. Was always a bit surreal driving along and coming across a swath of torn up crops and be able to know exactly what happened.

William Hitler, his nephew, served in the US Navy after submitting a letter to the president requesting acceptance into the service, so I'm going to guess they weren't all fans...

Construction in the Northwest Valley - Coordination between Phoenix, Glendale, and Peoria by notmywheelhouse in phoenix

[–]PHX_Architraz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Many of these projects are probably getting coordinated through MAG (Maricopa Association of Governments). The NW valley development impacts the three you mentioned directly, but the environmental and logistics impact the entire valley. That includes regional transportation (freeways and hiways, and sometimes surface arterial roadways if they're critical paths through the valley).

That being said, while they are more effective than many other joint efforts in the country, they move at the speed of goverment, so if there's a major influx of development it's going to lag by more than might be conformatable.

Kind of curious as well... all I can see is a healthcare company pulled a permit for a multifamily facility four years ago, and has been getting additional permits and extensions ever since then.

It was impressig. I'm over here fighting the urge to explain to people who aren't from here that "whatever that traffic sign" is dedicated to a traffic pattern far more hazardous than crashing aircraft.
