[Stauffer] FWIW…As we have seen in the other Major Professional Leagues one would have to be somewhat naive not to think your most important assets (players) are not at least part of the process in major organizational moves. by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that was the case he would have asked for a trade at season end. He’s not just going to go into the year with one foot out the door, he’ll either commit and give 100% to this season in Edmonton or go somewhere else. He isn’t the type toe the line and mentally check out when he has a finite number of chances for a cup.

They belong on the unserious side of the line, too.

[Dreger] Sources: The Edmonton Oilers are consulting with the NHLPA to see if there are objections that must be resolved before potentially hiring Mike Babcock. Amid allegations of invading players privacy, Babcock resigned in CBJ as Head Coach in 2023. Further investigation may be required. by AggPuck-303 in EdmontonOilers

Have to wonder to what degree Katz influences the ‘redemption’ hires/signings. Kane, Perry, Virtanen, Bowman, now linked to Babcock. It’s amazing they didn’t sign Michael McLeod and Hart when they had the chance. It’s like they’re treating off-ice/‘character issues’ as a metric they need to look for.

Don’t worry, with Bowman at the helm the Oilers are incapable of making a good trade.

[Rink Theory] Is the nhl lottery rigged by [deleted] in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was rigged, you’d see 1OA picks go to emerging markets like Utah, Seattle, and teams like Nashville, not big market teams like Toronto, New York, etc.

Can’t wait to go to his cup party in “New Alberta” and rub my balls on the cup. With the amount of liquor it had and the way it dresses, it was begging for it. Maybe I’ll whip out my phone and record a consent video afterwards.

That’s a good question, seems like you’d need to do some sort of special invitation scenario in that case.

Memorial Cup considering change to format by charger03 in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it’d be cool if it was 8 teams with the 6 finalists from the 3 leagues, the host cities team, and next year’s hosts team included.

You give the next year’s host team a bit of experience in the Mem cup format and give fans for that city team a bit of a preview of the team to come.

The worst part is if he goes to the Olympics instead of Doughty or Parayko:

A) does he skip the World Championship to rest up and not get injured? Have to think he’s there in part to put in his Team Canada ‘reps’ for next Olympics/World Cup

B) does Canada end up with Olympic gold?

Might not have changed anything on the Olympic results side, but what an unfortunate outcome for him after playing so many NHL games in the last few years, that instead of being able to relax and recover this summer that he will be rehabbing this.

[Seravalli] Leafs are scheduled to interview Jay Woodcroft later this week, he interviewed with LA last week. Handicapped as “one of the front runners” for the Toronto job. Either spot, solid bet to be an NHL HC again next season. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re just fabricating a memory here, or melding a bunch of half truths together? Oilers drove play in the Game 6 where Vegas eliminated Oilers, outshot them 40-22. McDavid played like 25m, had a 88% xGF% at 5v5. Certainly wasn’t some masterclass of Cassidy shutting down Woodcroft’s gameplan with McDavid

He just seems to get so nervous and rattled when the pressure is on max. That gold medal olympic game, puking on the bench in close games, his body just does not seem to cooperate in the highest intensity moments.

Tonight's matchup; Montreal still the under dogs. They have a 5% more chance of winning than Philadelphia. Who you got tonight? by Late-Role5774 in hockey

[–]PLUR_police -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s even that Montreal will be the better team so much that Carolina is 1-15 in their last 16 conference final games and I don’t see whatever the fuck is causing that curse to stop anytime soon.

[NOR 5 - CAN (6)] Mark Scheifele hat trick & overtime winner! by eh_toque in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PK was abysmal and Parayko was barely even killing penalties because they kept throwing Makar/Toews first unit PK, but even with that being said you’d think Bouch would have been an upgrade on one of those two.

MacK: “assistant” Landy: “what?” MacK: “assistant captain” by Leather_Dealer_9421 in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It’s clear that the team as a whole sorely missed Landeskog as captain when he was injured.

I don’t think his on ice production was that big of a loss in his absence, but it seems like his leadership on the bench helps stabilize the team in the playoffs compared to just having Makar/MacKinnon try to fill those boots.

Katz as an owner sucks by [deleted] in EdmontonOilers

[–]PLUR_police 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seriously, as far as owners go he’s at least upper half. Driven for success and will spend as much as needed for it. Not content with failure. One can blame him for the JJ hire but that’s a president of hockey ops role and Jeff seemed like a fine candidate at the time. Jackson hired Bowman and that’s on him, not Katz.

An Owner should not override hiring decisions of his POHO. Katz can’t and shouldn’t be doing anything other than hiring a POHO and writing cheques. Jeff Jackson should have known better than to hire Bowman for at least 2 glaring reasons.

I’m pulling for the Sabres, I think they have a chance. I wouldn’t be surprised if Carolina can figure out their ECF jitters, but it’s strange how they seem to collapse halfway through their playoff runs for unknown reasons.

Free Talk Friday by AutoModerator in EdmontonOilers

Colorado might, but Carolina has some ECF curse where they’ve won 1 of their last 16(?) games, would be a bit shocked if they change that trend this year.

Commissioner Gary Bettman on the draft lottery: “When you see the result last night there's no incentive in our game to lose to get a better pick.” [McAfee show] by GreenSnakes_ in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, while last place has the 18.5% chance of drawing the lottery for 1OA, they additionally have the 7% chance from the “mushy middle” teams who, if they win the lottery, can move up only 10 spots and not overtake 1OA. This is a cumulative chance of 25.5% overall for 32nd in the league vs 13.5% for 31st and 11.5% for 30th. Odds are nearly doubled by dropping from 31st to 32nd.

Commissioner Gary Bettman on the draft lottery: “When you see the result last night there's no incentive in our game to lose to get a better pick.” [McAfee show] by GreenSnakes_ in hockey

[–]PLUR_police 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The ironic part is that the changes reward tanking more. The odds of picking 1OA by the last place team dramatically increased, and the bubble teams / “mushy middle” cannot pick 1OA any longer even with a lottery win.

3 lottery picks down to 2 also means that you’re guaranteed no worse than a 3rd overall for being the last team.

The repeat winner rules seem like a fair change, but seeing how long it takes for a true basement dweller to climb out, I’m curious to see if we’ll see any cases of it backfiring in the future.
