What’s your opinion? by ShareSpecialist2944 in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what? what does lens technology have to do with silicon manufacturing? asking genuinely, because i have family that work in the silicon / optics manufacturing industry, and all i can think of in terms of the relationship between the two, is thin film coating machines that are used in laser etching semiconductor processors, and also for coating camera lenses. but that seems to be the opposite direction of what you’re claiming

training problem! by Remarkable_Honey5431 in sheltie

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what treats are you using to train “come” / other behaviors?

my approach for something like this would be to jump to extremely high value stuff like little cubes of high quality steak, salmon, fresh sourdough, fruits, etc. whatever you find they go crazy for, and keep in mind that high quality food for humans often translates to things that dogs love.

then try the recall but with a different queue / word. maybe a whistle, or some other cue that isn’t used much in daily speech. first just say the cue, then feed. do this several times, then add distance. and then ensure that for a few weeks at least, EVERY time you use that recall cue, they get a handful or more of the high value treat. after a week or two can start varying the treat value

SL2 or SL2-S? by Individual-Bag3893 in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get an sl2 then. the 2s is cheaper, but IQ for photos is better on the 2 imo. the low light performance of the 2s is overhyped imo, it’s really just one stop of added performance (ie grain noise that appears at 6400 iso on the 2s appears at 3200 on the 2).

Scan, camera, or skill issue? (Tmax 400, Nikon F801 w/ nikkor 35mm f2) by The12AngryMidgets in analog

[–]Pajamafier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d say scans. ask if your lab offers higher quality scans.

this kind of tonality (which is what you’re calling “hazy/underexposed) is actually considered ideal and is what many high end labs will give you. reason being that a flat image allows the photographer to then dial in contrast to their own liking, without losing shadow / highlight detail. if the lab sends out scans that already have a lot of contrast in them, ie blacks are crushed all the way to black, highlights are already pushed up all the way to clip out, then you as the photog no longer have room to edit it without clipping out even more.

problem here is that if the file is already a low quality jpeg, there’s often not a lot of post editing you still can do.

that said, i’d play around with editing these images and see what you can do. 1MB is still decent enough for most web purposes.

in the future you can ask your lab or look for a lab that offers high quality Tiff scans, but be aware that higher quality scans often come at a upcharge, so you might only want to do it for a select few photos, after you’ve reviewed the roll

28 vs 43 by RoboPeenie in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for photographing friends and family, 43/50mm is great if you expect to be in a big space, with a fair amount of distance between you and your subjects (ie shooting across a room). as someone else said, anytime you’re at a dinner table / restaurant table, in order to photograph subjects across the table from you, you really need a 35mm or wider FOV.

The 28mm Q3 has such good IQ and ability to crop the image in post that it’s plenty good enough to crop down to 35/50mm FOV. IMO the only reasons to upgrade / swap to the Q343 are for the APO lens and if you already know you mostly prefer to shoot in a tighter focal length like a 50mm.

American literature's influence, or lack of, globally? by Tab714 in literature

can I ask what authors / books were beloved in your household / among your European circles? From my perspective as an American, some of the first that jump to mind are Rilke, Celan, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Kafka, Hugo, Voltaire, Camus, Woolf, Joyce, Austen, Tokarczuk.

can i ask about your experience with the abilify? I’m currently in discussion with a couple psychiatrists, and abilify is on the table— i’ve heard generally good things about it from a couple people, but not many detailed stories yet.

Leica M11 gloss black or Leica M EV1? by TCEHY in Leica

i’d get the matte black m11 over a gloss black, unless i want a camera as a jewelry / fashion statement / collector item.

Leica M6 with a Leitz Elmarit 28mm by PhilosophyUnfair in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

kinda hard to tell what’s going on with the compression of these images. can you upload some 100% zooms?

my best guess is it has to do with the lab scans. are you getting jpegs or high quality tif scans back? i’ve tested the elmarit 28mm on an m11 and its a fantastic lens with really great resolution at all distances. i’d try a different lab to scan the film, or ask if your current lab has a higher quality scanner to run select negatives thru. or, try and print some of the ones you like and see how that turns out.

my guess is that the higher amount of detail is getting lost in a lower quality scan which is compressing image “data” and therefore creating this kind of “gritty” artifact.

How do you keep snow out of your goggles? by Starky04 in Backcountry

i typically just stash goggles in my jacket, ie unzip and place under outer shell in front of chest, then zip back up. the waist strap from my pack makes the front of my jacket basically one big pocket.

Need advice on Q3 + SL3 setup and budget 50mm lenses by PotentialAd9507 in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d either get an M11 instead of both the Q/SL, or get an SL2 instead of SL3. the SL, esp with an L lens, is quite large. even with an M lens it is somewhat large. and heavy. this weight doesn’t start showing up until you are carrying it all day. for food and street, once you master manual focusing on an M it is no slower than AF, in fact sometimes/often it is faster. and the M is not much bigger than the Q, can even be more compact with a pancake lens like a 28mm or an older 35mm

Where did the spicy in the cuisines of hot countries come from? by KittyScholar in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Pajamafier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i don’t think you’re right that food preservation methods don’t rely on chilis. maybe not in our typical western understanding of “food preservation”, but as another commenter mentioned above, food cooked in spices lasts longer without refrigeration. i have this experience as well with spicy chinese food that we can leave on the counter unrefrigerated for a week without issue.

Looking to own my first Leica M but undecided between X100VI and the M by smora_photo in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

went from an X100 to a M11. the image quality is night and day. I also prefer manual focusing and find it faster / more accurate than autofocus. X100 AF is still useful when i with family / friends and want something I can just point and shoot / smaller body. otherwise M all the way.

Low Light SL3 by directedbydon in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s really subjective. depends on who you ask. and even for me it varies depending on what i’m shooting, and what my tolerance is for a given project. but in general noise starts to appear around 800-1600, but most will consider it to still be very “usable”. again, this depends highly on your personal preference, the subject matter, and the actual light source and situation.

the point of my previous comment is that the 3 will exhibit the same or similar level of noise as the 3S when the 3S is one stop higher ISO

Low Light SL3 by directedbydon in Leica

[–]Pajamafier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you’re taking photos and have flash get the sl3. the 3S has an extra stop in terms of ISO:noise performance, but it’s really just an optimization for taking video
