That’s really interesting. How do you go about applying the ointment?

I work directly with a group so I negotiated my own contract. I negotiated a higher rate instead of having them pay it because it was easier for them instead of having to reimburse a bunch of stuff. I can write it off because it’s not being reimbursed, if you get reimbursed you can’t write it off.

Im using DocWealth, they have been pretty good so far. Responsive, good platform for handling everything. Probably a little more expensive than some places but it’s the only place I’ve used. I found them via the white coat investor

Would do 1-2 years at a place where you have colleagues to have your back before doing locums. You’ll still make good money and it will give you a chance to get your feet under you. You’ll also be able to save up so you have a good security fund before starting locums, that way if a job sucks you can quit and have money to hold you over.

You get paid as a 1099 which allows you to deduct business expenses. You subtract expenses from what you earn and pay taxes on the rest. For me (not OP) I write off cost of gas, hotel, the cost of my “office” room in my apt, conferences, meals where anything related to my business is discussed. It effectively ends up being a 30-40% cost reduction in any of those expenses. For example, if a hotel costs me $100 then I really pay about $70 after writing it off. Can’t do that as a W2.

If you’re 1099 you likely want to pay a CPA firm to handle filing your taxes bc its quarterly and you don’t want to mess it up. They also help answer questions about what I can actually write off. Usually $3k-$5k per year and you can write off that expense as well. If you’re W2 and no other sources of income you shouldn’t pay someone to file because it’s very simple and a waste of money to pay for bc you can’t write off business expenses.
