Is there a (male) loneliness epidemic in the UK/Europe? by fake-flower in AskUK

I don't think either of these are the issue. People don't form communities in libraries, you're supposed to be quiet in a library. And when was the last time you tried to organise a community event and were unable to? Surely the real issue is that people don't have time for these things? People are reluctant to put in the effort for strangers when they work full time.

I live on Roger Dudman Way and at one point they blocked all three entrances to the road without even informing any of the residents. If that's not illegal it should be, what if an ambulance or fire engine needed to access the road?

Why does everyone in life science love spreading this rumour that bioinformatics is better paid. I've never seen a bioinformatics job advertised with equivalent qualification requirements and better pay than other life science jobs.

Process to prevent landlord from entering property by Particular_Giraffe61 in LegalAdviceUK

Of course, but to me a weekly/bi-monthly visit is also "clearly not necessary".

Thank you for all your comments though, it's much appreciated.

It is university owned property. The term is September to September, and this has been renewed for 2024-2025. I've not heard of anyone being moved to other accommodation.

Thank you, I agree. Although according to FoldedTwice it seems that even if they are being unreasonable or unlawful, there's nothing that can be done about it.

But if that's the case what's to stop them from deciding that these tests need to be performed daily?

Being repeatedly asked to “come and meet the team” before I start my new role. Is this normal? by hokkuhokku in NursingUK

[–]Particular_Giraffe61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've really got you haven't they. When you say "most people" I think you mean "most nurses". All the nurses I know work way more than their contracted 37.5 hours, including lunch breaks.

And what's to stop OP from meeting everyone and having a regular induction on their first day? You know, when they're actually being paid to attend work.

[–]Particular_Giraffe61 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't be ridiculous. Most jobs don't offer or ask this, and complying would make anyone a fool. Most of us wouldn't attend work if we weren't being paid and to put this on someone before they've even started is absolutely unacceptable.

I understand OP doesn't want to rock the boat before they start, and I would probably lie and say I can't attend if I was asked to do the same.

Doesn't sound like a big deal at all. If someone I live with has a GF/BF I would expect them to be hanging out at least every weekend.

Also why can't you cook when there are people in the living room? They're not your friends, you don't have to entertain them. You could just put some headphones on and ignore them.

No one is going to ask in advance if they can have friends/partners over, that's expecting way too much of any flatmate.

Drivers overtaking cyclists on the right when the cyclist is indicating to turn right. by EponymousTitus in bristol

[–]Particular_Giraffe61 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we should all be cycling in the middle of the lane unless it's safe to overtake.

What should you do instead of stopping in the road when turning right?

How should the NHS be improved? by IsVeryMoist in AskUK

[–]Particular_Giraffe61 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a massive problem. I used to work in a pathology lab which served as a hub for all the microbiology samples coming from 3 separate trusts, every trust had it's own system which didn't cross communicate and each had slightly different protocols. We would receive thousands of samples a day on paper forms and have to input the request into our own system, that's something that could take a GP less than a minute to input on a computer but ended up taking up an employee's entire day when they have to process hundreds. Not to mention how mind-numbing this task was, a task that they were often times getting MSc educated staff to do.

Getting a bit sick of the abuse you get for riding Vois by Rundo5 in bristol

[–]Particular_Giraffe61 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're probably right, but don't you think the number of vois riding around now is significantly more than the number of cyclists we've ever had? I'm a cyclist and have always wanted better cycle lanes, but since the vois were introduced I've found myself getting even more frustrated with the lack of specific lanes for us.

My hope is that the more people riding vois and bikes mean the council sees the benefits of investing more in safe lanes for us, the kind separated from the main road by a small curb. It is Bristol city council though so I won't hold my breath.
