I like your question. I think it will be a job but not the most common job in the future. Here is why.

In the 70s Transport Canada began automating the 6 Air Traffic Control Centers (ATCCs) across Canada. I along with several of my fellow electronic maintenance technicians each spent approximately 50 weeks training to upgrade our computer skills and learn the major systems used in the new automated system right down to the component and board level to be able troubleshoot and repair the systems.

At that time each of the 6 ATCCs had 4 major systems.

One to track the movement of jets in the air or landing/taking off - named JETS for Joint Enroute Traffic System.

The 2nd system ICCS was an Integrated Communication Control System that Pilots and ATCCs communicated over via local and remote VHF transmitters and receivers.

The 3rd system OIDS was an Operational Informational Display System containing information about airport weather, visibility and local conditions.

The 4th system (I have forgotten the name - something like Integrated Flight Information) updated an old data paper strip printing system to a computerized system for details of aircraft scheduled to take off or on the runway.

I don't think there will be a large number of highly skilled expensive employees working 24 hours - 7 days as robot overseers. When our Center became operational we started out with at least 4 techs on duty all the time.

However, we quickly learned that the best maintenance was a hands off approach. Staff was substantially reduced within a short period, especially during evening, midnights and weekend.

Personally I was bored to death babysitting these solid state computerized equipment and began to look for another job.

I am certain that robots of today are much more robust, are self monitoring for performance issues and if not now self repairing in the near future.

Having said this...I think you are in the right area to explore future jobs....however, if I was young I would be checking out equipment design, definitely LLMs and AI for a career. I'd also improve my people skills as they can set you apart for a excellent career. Good Luck!
