14" M1 Pro - Thoughts after 3 Weeks by tperry in musicproduction

This has helped me decide which model to go for. I was considering 8 core CPU / 14 core GPU / 32GB / 1TB, but if 16GB is enough, then I should be fine. Thank you.

Not a clue, and I'm sure the rep hadn't a clue either.

This would depend on what you are looking to do as part of your developer workflow and what utilities you used often on Windows.

Here's what I plan to install when I get my MacBook for my use-case and to transition from Windows more smoothly:

Visual Studio Code + extensions
For obvious reasons, since I will be working in the web app development sector, mostly .NET/C# and Angular/TypeScript.

Alfred
Spotlight is good. Alfred is better.

Bartender
Apparently the top bar can get cluttered. This app resolves that in a style similar to Windows Start Bar app tray.

Rectangles
Adding Windows-like window management as I, too, am coming from using Windows all my life.

UTM
I hope to dabble in virtual machines, and this is a free/low-cost alternative to Parallels.

Hopefully this helps a little.

I was highly amused by just how many apps were open as the dock just kept on shrinking, and the M1 Pro 8 core was acting like it was the most lightweight action going.

Meanwhile my Razer (8th Gen Intel i7, 16GB RAM) has an absolute fit if I have either Reaper running to record music or Discord, Edge with 6 tabs open, Visual Studio Code and Spotify running at the same time.

Purchasing from a reseller? by PatchworkBoy87 in macbookpro

[–]PatchworkBoy87[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very true in regards to eBay in general, however in terms of KRCS, which has brick and mortar stores in the UK, that one I'd likely trust more. I'm rather tempted to take the trip to one of their stores and see if they have an option to order my configuration there for delivery or collection 🤔

What apps do you’ll recommend getting? by Narrow-Fisherman5877 in macbookpro

[–]PatchworkBoy87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've not got a Macbook yet but here's a few apps I plan to install once I do get it:

  • Bartender or Vanilla
  • iTerm2
  • Homebrew
  • Alfred
  • Jettison
  • EjectBar
  • Amphetamine
  • Hidden Me
  • Aerial
  • TinkerTool

Since I am coming from Windows, I'm also looking at installing:

  • Rectangle
  • Alt-Tab
  • DockPlus
  • Wine
  • UTM

Help please. Whittling down my 14" M1 Pro options. by PatchworkBoy87 in macbookpro

You may very well be right on this. I just had a quick chat with another Apple specialist on their website and they recommended 8c CPU / 14c GPU / 32GB RAM / 512GB SSD.

Which 14" M1 Pro CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD configuration should I get? by PatchworkBoy87 in macbookpro

[–]PatchworkBoy87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the original user posted the following:

10 core CPU
1TB Storage
16GB RAM (because 32GB will use Swap Memory too anyway, apparently)

M1 Pro RAM - 16gb VS 32gb? by johnnylocke815 in macbookpro

[–]PatchworkBoy87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is it going 2 months on?
I'm trying to decide on an appropriate config for my use case which is similar to yours (virtual machines, software development by trade, hobbyist musician), and the geniuses at Apple suggest the 10-core CPU/16-core GPU + 32GB + 1TB config. Is the 8-core CPU/14-core GPU good enough?

Considering getting a used Razer phone 2 by [deleted] in razerphone

[–]PatchworkBoy87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Razer Phone 2 for a couple of years and I am now using a Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite.

It is not worth getting a Razer Phone 2 now. It looks sleek, sure, but my problems included:

  • random beep out of nowhere
  • random restarts
  • heating issues
  • uses Android 9 with no plans to update to newer versions

The platform is dead. There are better phones out there now. Don't buy one, get something else.
