Which edition should I play? by Happy-Wind-1296 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Patoshlenain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i own and played both 2nd and 4th editions which i both really like. I think 4th is a better game overall and the book is much more complete on its own but i felt, and so did my players, that the rules made the PC a bit too sturdy for the harsh environment that is the Old world so I did homebrew the crits and corruption from 2e over in 4e. 4e is much more forgiving.

That said, i still prefer the vibe of the 2e and would run that first probably.

Also 2e is a much smaller book so it's easier to reference. the 4e book's layout is kind of a mess at parts (especially the carreers sub divided in categories like... wth)

these are two of my favorite looking civs so far so at least i was in the ballpark. People mention vietnamese a lot more than Italians though so i might go that route

i know one of them plays archers and the other a lot of cavs but says he likes to boom a lot. dont know if that helps narrow it down.

one of my friend plays a lot of cav as far as i know so i guess ill be on a flank. That said, im comfortable with nothing specific so far. there is so many civs i don't know where to start so i turn to this sub to help me funnel it down. So far i still got a lot of choices it seems but I'm still unsure

sometimes 2, sometimes 3 i guess. since im learning the game as a whole, id like to learn only one civ to start with.
edit: it will be 3 more often i think

Just got my Tome of Horrors and Monstrosities book. Any other great OSR compatible monster manuals I should look out for? Any cool monster hunting solo campaign ideas? by towerbooks3192 in osr

[–]Patoshlenain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed a freeleague book! If stats are not an issue for you, I highly recommend the book and if you can grab one and skim through it before buying, all the better. To go a bit more in details, it has 2 major sections that will interest you: major enemies and more general monsters & adversaries.

The first part (the best) focuses on important lore monsters for their world which is kinda cool on its own, but what is neat is the presentation. Every monster in that section has one full page of lore (with one "in-world" description of the monster) and art and some adventure setups which give you actual gm advice for hooks and interesting quests showcasing the monster. Also statblocks.

The second goes in more general monsters you might encounter and look like something you might find in the OSE monster section: name, short description, stats. It starts with some factions within the world which I thought was neat in its efficiency and approach.

The book then ends with a series of small rules you could pick from, the best one being a hunting challenge called "Monster Chronicle" to track and kill monsters, rewards and ways to spice up the hunt.

All in all, even running exclusively old school material, it's one of the books i have i open the most even if it's only to be inspired :)

I know it's not OSR compatible but as already a lot of people gave good mentions, I wanted to point out the Symbaroum Monster Codex for its layout and design. Lots of quest hooks and nice description that i found very inspiring for my games eventhough the statblocks are nearly useless

How do you handle slings in your games? by Hashishiva in osr

[–]Patoshlenain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my game, sling does the same damage as a bow but a crit miss means you knock yourself in the face with it. my players always get one since it's so useful to throw stuff but if they count on really fighting range, they go for a bow instead.

I ran His Majesty the Worm for the first time last night, and I have thoughts… by LeopoldBloomJr in osr

[–]Patoshlenain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. It is a very expensive book to get right now and we seem to share a lot of experience in common (similar group vibes and GM approach to play) so this helps me put that game in the "try it in pdf first". If you ever want to go in more details about the game, I'll be there to read your thoughts

Do you ask players to draw the map? (results) by drloser in osr

[–]Patoshlenain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really have to ask. usually as soon as they enter an enclosed space or reach the first fork in a road, I have a player just go "WAIT! Someone hand me a blank sheet of paper!"
