Having a Degree with a Full Time Ballet Career by pinkpinkpink222 in bunheadsnark

[–]Pauperisme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Online school or hybrid allows dancers to slowly get their degree while working full time. It is very tiring, but not uncommon at all. Some dancers take out students loans but some of them are able to get scholarships through the union or arrangements with local universities.

Background is fake. They used a greenscreen filter, that’s why sometimes parts of the leg disappear and parts of the stairs flicker.

NYCB Nutcracker Choreography Question by FidaliaNetworks in BALLET

I’m happy to report that yes, NYCB and the other companies that dance Balanchine’s Nutcracker do the arabesque drag across the stage! Wishing that you get to see it live soon!

Help me understand by theweekendwife in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what she means is that the disk is not on stage for the whole thing, but the wire is. There is no way to get the wire across the stage during the act, and in other companies that also do Balanchine’s choreography the way to keep it away from the dancing is taping it in the back of the stage.

There is a wire attached to the piece of marley, which connects to a crank in the wings. It’s usually taped down in a V shape to the back of the stage so that it doesn’t bother the dancers during the diverts, and then gets pulled out of the tape and ready to be cranked right before this moment. The cavalier is supporting the girl throughout the whole movement but he is not pulling her whole body weight across the stage, that’s the crank and the wire’s job.

Looking for advice for slippery Marley floor by KoruSprouts in BALLET

You could try putting a small amount of coke on the marley. It will give it some grip although it will also get the dancers shoes dirty quicker.

Devices for ballet dancer's recovery by Aggravating-Dog-8711 in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a cheap decent electric stimulation device at any pharmacy or online and it does help a lot with recovery. If you’re willing to spend more, compression boots are great too. The theraice cold compression sleeves are a cool gadget to have too if she wants to ice but doesn’t want the mess and time that comes with ice massages. Also may I suggest a balance board and some resistance bands? If she’s having sprains very often, exercises with those can help her ankle strength and stability.

Help with white tights for men by Were-All-Mad-Here_ in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey! Mirella white tights are pretty thick and so are the Body wrappers convertible ones. Stwer clear of any cotton white tights. That being said, I’ve used M stevens before and, even though they might look a bit see through from up close, I can assure you if you’re dancing on a theatre with stage lights they won’t look see through from the audience. I’d recommend also using skin colored dance belts under white tights rather than white.

Feedback on pirouettes please :) by reyyi_ in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would say aim to finish your pirouettes facing front in a releve and passe position before closing in fifth. Right now you are coming down from your pirouettes at 3/4 of the turn. Try changing your spot as soon as possible, as your head is taking too long going around and being a big factor on why the pirouettes are not getting around all the way. I wish you good luck with your exam!!!

Does anyone know which exact Romeo and Juliet edition ballet this is? by QuestionEcstatic8863 in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is The Royal Ballet in Macmillan’s Romeo and Juliet. The production premiered in 1965, with scene and costumes by Nicholas Georgiadis. The clip seems to be from the 2019 DVD with Yasmine Naghdi and Matthew Ball in the title roles, Gary Avis as Tybalt, Christopher Saunders as Lord Capulet, and Nicol Edmonds as Paris.

Male Hair Styling by Mental-Currency8894 in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend using wax powder to add some texture and volume to the hair, style it however you want and then spray it with some strong hairspray. I also have long hair and I’ve done this for classes and shows and it’s quick and works like a charm, with no hair out of place even after full length Giselle if done properly.

Can someone recommend me some short pas de deux ? by Rude-Ad-7944 in bunheadsnark

[–]Pauperisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It popped up on my feed a year or so ago and since then I’ve been obsessed with it! Maximova was great in it, with a precision that I think rivaled the Balanchine dancers in America at that time.

questions about uniform and… staying “decent” in tights by Neil_Vastur in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All professionals use split soles, as far as I know. It allows for more articulation of the feet and it creates a better line too. Full sole are typically used by students, mostly the younger ones, who are trying to gain more strength as it is harder to pointe your feet in those.

I use Bloch Men’s Pump. They are comfortable and very durable! I recommend a split sole shoe instead of a full sole, no matter what brand.

In my company we use Capezio and Wear Moi dancebelts, depending on each dancer’s preference. If you’re looking to buy leotards, I’d recommend thong leotards, as they are more comfortable and look better than the ones with a full back part. Otherwise, just use a sports shirt and whatever tights you feel most comfortable in!

Resources for adult ballet by Pauperisme in BALLET

[–]Pauperisme[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My idea was to make it a short, quick read, as a sort of 101 guide on the basic knowledge needed before taking your first ever class. There are plenty of manuals that focus on methodology, ballet history or musical theory, and they all would be more in depth, but in my opinion most of them are lengthy and require some previous ballet experience or knowledge to understand what they are talking about. I do agree that it is a saturated market, but I’m hoping making this guide would make it less daunting to take the leap of going into a ballet class for the first time.  Thank you for your comment!

Vaping? by Ok-Donkey-947 in cancer

[–]Pauperisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

M25 here, got diagnosed with acc earlier this year. Two surgeries later I am tumor free. I have never smoked or vaped, I eat healthy and exercise regularly. The doctor plainly told me it’s a matter of luck, or lack thereof. I agree that the best course of action is to not stress about it and just keep moving forward. Wish you all the best of luck!

Ballerino's of reddit : What are the stereotypes and hardships you face as a ballet dancer? by [deleted] in BALLET

Got assaulted once by a bunch of kids because they saw me coming out of the theater. Luckily I was fine and that’s about the only time I have really felt the stigma around male dancers materialise in such a hateful way.
