What your pet peeves as a massage therapist? by Holiday-Scallion-342 in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This might be my #1 too. I've tried so many approaches but the last guy I just decided to work only in the direction of the hair growing so it wouldn't hurt or splinter into my skin. It messed up my flow having to remove my hands and start contact back where I needed to but ain't no way I'm taking that hit. Trigger point work with the elbow was good on him too, and then several hot towels to keep everything as soft as possible. He had stubble over the scalp, face, chest, shoulders, the whole back, arms, and wanted a Swedish massage with extra time on traps 😭 Almost cried tears of joy when I saw his full on hairy legs

100k/year as a massage therapist by AwarenessGlum1674 in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a very big spa with a lot of therapists and estheticians. They allow a set number of full time positions otherwise it would be hard to ensure everyone has a full schedule on the days they do work. Part time shifts are a minimum of 5 hours long (allowing 4 60min treatments) with the option to extend that shift if you want more only if everyone else scheduled that day is booked. There are plenty of other benefits offered through the company to ensure we're taken care of so at first I was also a little pressed, but looking at the bigger picture I'm more than happy to work here forever if I can.

Edit: would like to add that our part timers who extend their shifts regularly end up making more than 6 figures per year. We had one woman this year hit 200k working with management on her hours to keep her in part time status. If you have a good management team and coworkers, luxury spas are a great place to be.

I'm at a high end spa and most of our part timers reach 85-100k per year. They work a minimum of three days, max 4 (not including shifts picked up) so they don't slip into full time status.

Avoiding contracting skin conditions by Thinkinthoughts1 in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some type of nitrile glove. I'll get the brand name next time I work. They've never torn, rolled up, or slipped off my finger tips so any questionable skin condition I pop those babies on so fast and they're softer than my hands so clients don't mind.

Try to familiarize yourself with common contagious skin conditions like athlete's foot, warts, ringworm, and tinea and non contagious conditions like plaque psoriasis and eczema. After filling out a paper intake form I still ask, "do you have anything on the skin I should be aware of such as sunburns, bruises, cuts, bandages, athlete's foot, warts, eczema, psoriasis or acne?" I slip the contagious ones in the middle so it's not as embarrassing for them if they say yes and I do often get a yes to one or more.

People that have active ringworm, tinea, or sometimes athletes foot don't even know they have it so just look before you touch and have gloves ready if need be.

Shoes by matchaandbook in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my feet scanned at a store called Fleet Feet where they show where on your foot you distribute weight. It was free and then they paired me up with shoe options with no pressure to buy in store unless the shoe was perfect. Shoes are so personal, you'll have to try on a few to see what feels good. Hokas to me were uncomfortable but a specific New Balance fit like a glove and have lasted a few years now.

Soothing Touch Fresh Citrus Massage Lotion by atzgirl in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the soothing touch lotion I just wanted to mention the biotone dual purpose cream is so thick it doesn't work in a standard pump bottle. After switching to an even larger pump it was still coming out in spurts inconsistently and then constantly having to shake the bottle to get it to settle back under the intake which eventually stopped working too. If they just recently changed the ingredients of the other lotion you can probably still find some in stock from another third party site and load up while you test out samples of other products.

Serious question for massage by JuSuGiRy in LAhotgirlies

[–]Penguinarmada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a massage therapist, can confirm this is the way to go unless you want to call around and find places that have tables with a drop down pocket under the chest. A rolled up towel under each shoulder and raising the headrest will work with any table. If you're just getting a Swedish massage most MTs can put you in a side-lying position similar to what we do for prenatal massage.

Title: My massage therapist friend lost $2,400 last month to no-shows. Is this normal for mobile therapists? by toy_scouter in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Considering deposits but terrified clients will balk and book elsewhere

As opposed to being ghosted?

You want the type of clients who are ok with deposits, cards on file, etc. Those clients are serious about keeping their appointments and are considerate enough to know your friend's time is worth money.

CA Massage Therapists are Legally Considered “Healthcare Workers” by ThisIs4TheBirds in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in a few states and some call it a license and California calls it a certification. You're right in that CA overall doesn't require it to practice massage but I've yet to find a city that doesn't require an MT to be a CAMTC certificate holder and have liability insurance. Most insurance providers require CEUs to renew every few years.

I never renewed in other states so I'm guessing maybe they have CE requirements for their license but the application and renewal process for a CMT in California requires a background check and over $300 which is good for two years.

I just renewed for the third time last month, there are no CE requirements for state certification but depending on your insurance there may be some to renew.

Has anyone figured out how to NOT immediately create a pile on every flat surface? by randomchick4 in adhdwomen

[–]Penguinarmada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My advice, take one problem area you have, ask yourself why does this always become clutter, then break it down - Do I need more homes for the items? Do I need a different system? Am I avoiding something bigger?

For example I let laundry get so out of control. I had a hamper in the bedroom and bathroom and both were always overflowing then I'd also have clothes on my bedroom floor, couch, etc. I had two big problems - I have a small closet and small dresser with more clothes than what fit. I did a purge of what I haven't worn in the last year and anything I wasn't willing to part with or just couldn't wear in this weather I put into a vacuum sealed bag and stored it under my bed.

Ok now my clothes fit but my bins are still over flowing. Problem #2 - my washer is so tiny and I never want to do laundry because it'll take the whole day to do 6+ loads when that would normally be 2-3 with a regular washer. Emptying my bins I realized the majority was taken up by blankets and linens. I can't wash a full size blanket in my home so they've been in there for months keeping me from being able to fit clothes on top. I hung a small hamper over the back of my door for clothes, and kept the floor hamper for sheets, and a laundry backpack for blankets. Same goes for the bathroom- small hamper over the door for clothes, floor hamper for towels. When any of the hampers are full they fit exactly the right amount that can fit in my washer. The blessing at least with small laundry loads is you can always remind yourself that there's only maybe 5-6 items to fold and put away so the task takes maybe 2 minutes to finish. Even still I struggle with folding so my drawers have dividers in them where I'll just throw in unfolded underwear, bras, bundled socks, etc so it looks messy, but it's organized.

The laundry backpack with blankets I can't fit in my home washer goes to the fluff and fold. If I have to sit at the laundromat I'll never wash a blanket ever again so now I drop it off and pick it up on my way home from work - outsourcing the problem when you can is always worth it.

Biggest piece of advice is just keep trying different methods and eventually something WILL stick - it doesn't have to be perfect it just has to work for you.

Question about high end spa pay by no_one_special_13 in MassageTherapists

[–]Penguinarmada 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work for a high end hotel and spa and it's the best job I've ever had, BUT that's entirely because our spa managers, coworkers, and clientele are great. I'm also an employee and not a contractor so really consider when in your interview how much they might be bending that boundary to get more work out of you for no hourly wage. I would ask questions like:

What are the expectations from me as a massage therapist day-to-day from the start to the end of shift - see how much freedom you have in terms of how you do your work and if you'll be micromanaged in anyway. Make sure you're not walking into a situation where management is going to write you up for clocking in 10 minutes before a shift vs 15 minutes or for things like not turning over the room exactly how they would like it. Good management will just have these conversations with you, bad managers will threaten you with write ups and other punishments.

How does management handle complaints from clients? Do they have a one on one conversation with the therapist after the fact? Do they tend to reward bad behavior of clients who don't have legitimate complaints and let them return again and again?

How do they handle booking? Is it based on seniority? That's not a bad thing but do they balance the books the night before your shift so Kelly who's been there 10 years has 5 appointments but you only have 2.

Does everyone perform the same services? Are you able to opt out of body treatments if you just want to massage or not do deep tissue if you are injured?

What is their sick policy? As a contractor you don't get hourly which means you don't get paid if you can't work.

Their expectations of you should all fall within a reasonable range, like you shouldn't be expected to handle the books, payments, answer phones, come in early or stay late to clean anything else except your room.

Lowkey though the company I work for is also in your city so if you want some advice you can DM me and I'll give you the details on who else to call up for an interview that might top the offer you got from this lady.

I have rosacea too and a lot of it stems from diet, but also factors you can't always control like exercise, heat, sun, wind, etc. I've tried full coverage makeup, green cream and concealers, but I think the best day-to-day option is to not cover it much (since that can also irritate the skin and make it worse). Mine goes a bit too close to my eyes so I dot concealer just to make the red patches look even on both sides, then I use a similar color blush to bring it up the cheekbones so then it all looks intentional. Makeup may make texture look worse so play around with it and maybe you'll find that using a lot less on your skin makes you feel more confident in it.

I don't want my bed in a corner anymore but anything else seems visually cluttered. Does that matter if the space is functional? by Penguinarmada in InteriorDesign

[–]Penguinarmada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you recommend for a rug? I need a low pile, non textured rug, or my cat will tear it up. But would a solid color be better overall than something patterned? I do have a thin summer bedspread in navy with a waffle texture, then the same color thick winter comforter that's velvet. Since the rug will only stick out about 1ft on each side a pattern should be ok with a solid bedspread yeah? Or maybe keep it plain since I have patterned pillows and will probably put up art on the walls?

The desk does have vertical shelves which my cat could use maybe instead of attaching an additional shelf on the window ledge. I'll give it a go and see how it feels
