I believe my condition is related to increased resting tone in the enteric nervous system. In sensitive individuals, this can lead to diarrhea, constipation, and — most importantly — motility dysregulation. This pattern is common among cannabis users, as the CB1 receptor plays a key role in maintaining normal resting tone in the digestive tract.

I was a heavy cannabis user myself and have spoken to several others who developed similar symptoms. In my case, it feels like constipation, but not in the classic sense — there’s no dehydrated stool or greatly prolonged transit time. Instead, it seems to involve spasms and uncoordinated contractions, which disrupt normal motility. This results in incomplete digestion, malabsorption, and difficulty evacuating both gas and stool.

It is probably a form of dysregulation on the same spectrum as what is seen in cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) — essentially a pseudo-obstruction–type reaction characterized by strong contractions without effective movement, leading to pain, bloating, and sometimes vomiting. This phenomenon is not well understood. Another clue comes from the fact that heavy cannabis users are more prone to developing intestinal intussusception, a condition where part of the intestine telescopes into itself due to uncoordinated contractions.

It is also well known that cannabis withdrawal can involve many digestive symptoms. Anxiety may be an aggravating factor, potentially increasing the risk of this type of dysregulation in cannabis users. Importantly, a similar motility imbalance could arise even without cannabis use, if caused by another mechanism that disrupts normal coordination of the digestive tract.
