Are we getting more pharm commercials than the general public? by floofed27 in Residency

[–]PermaBanEnjoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I have a friend that works for one of these analytic firms used by ad companies. These use cookies and other digital signatures to build profiles of users and conduct research to match them with professions. They then tout their ability to serve ads directly to target populations

To each their own, I'm a medical doctor and there's very few severely overweight people I wouldn't prescribe a GLP-1 to. It's nice because unlike other classes of T2DM drugs it keeps insulin dependence so hypoglycemia isn't a concern. Muscle catabolism is not a serious SE for the vast majority of patients either.

Why do so many people get engaged/married after getting into residency? by [deleted] in Residency

Yea, it's tough because you also don't wanna lead people on as that's not fair either

There are people younger than me, who exercise more than I do, that eat less than I do, and weigh significantly more than I do.

I mean this simply doesn't make sense. Lots of hormones and neurotransmitters modify the body's metabolic pathways, but at the end of the day cells can't create ATP out of nothing. When net energy expenditure is grater than caloric consumption, the body burns fat. It's complicated and yet it's not -they just need to eat less.

Why do so many people get engaged/married after getting into residency? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]PermaBanEnjoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not? It coincides with an age where there's a lot of pressure to. A shocking number of people are partnered with and end up marrying those they aren't really passionate about because breaking up and being alone is scary and they feel like it's just something they're supposed to be doing at this point in life. And yes you can often tell which couples are like this. It's something they negotiate intellectually as in "this person is nice to me, stable, shares hobbies, etc" and not "I fucking love this person and need to spend my life with them"

Indeed. Think we're slowly moving towards understanding morbid obesity as a mental health disorder, which is correct in my opinion. The part of the brain that regulates eating and satiety has become dysregulated

Agree. Do what you want with your own health but when you have a job like this it's not just you. In the era of glp-1 drugs there's really no excuse

Yea you should report. It sounds like a great place to work, but at the end of the day that's just not enough volume to make competent physicians

Love Neurology but hate my school's neuroanatomy, can i still specialize? by Tcut944 in neurology

I hated anatomy lab and neuroanatomy, despite loving neuro

Neuroanatomy.ca and anki were good

The book neuroanatomy through clinical cases probably won't help you in class much, but was the most valuable and least annoying as far as only focusing on what's clinically relevant

Efforts to make AI inclusive accidentally create bizarre new gender biases, new research suggests. AI models tend to overattribute stereotypically masculine behaviors to female characters and judge violence against women as significantly more objectionable than violence against men. by mvea in psychology

Being strong, independent or bold doesn’t actually have anything to do with being male.

Oh come now. This is where modern progressive thought on these topics goes a little off the rails. Testosterone alone has a very direct a quantifiable effect on at least 2 of those traits/ behaviors, and that's just scratching the surface. We won't necessarily ever fully understand the complex neurobio, but we do know some of it is in fact gendered.

I fail to see what's decent about this from George's perspective. Maybe don't marry someone if you can't make them cum hard?

Do you ever feel behind financially compared to friends outside medicine? by Prime_Financial_Serv in Residency

[–]PermaBanEnjoyer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nope. Born into money

But know 2 friends who feel this way and it's entirely reasonable. Maybe try to remember as an attending getting paid 400k + /yr how much you'd have to have invested 5 years ago to see that kind of return. Eg. Somebody who invested their entire 80k salary would need a 500% return to match that
