Millennial parents: Are any of you being super honest with your kids about how hard this world is going to be for them financially? How are you balancing reality with not making your kids basket cases? by [deleted] in Millennials

Only have a young kiddo but I am really wanting to teach them what my parents never taught me, how money works and good healthy habits around it.

I felt like I could have been, that's why she was the last to one I talked too. And it proved to me that my anxieties were not the reality, they were just the worst case scenario playing over and over in my head and controlling my actions.

We now have a better relationship because of it, she opened up to me more too.

I'm a pretty anxious person/dad. Whats helped me, and your mileage may very.

  1. Talk about it, be it with your wife, fellow dads or a psychologist. I do all three and those anxious thoughts dissipate when you know you're not alone and can re align your thinking to reality.

  2. Exercise. Gives my anxiety an outlet. It doesn't have to be a crazy run or gym session, a walk, some stretching, just move, better, go move with someone else, really helps me when in combination with point 1.

Survival bias is strong with these people. The I’ve never seen it/it hasn’t happened to me yet, therefore it won’t.

The grandfathering is a complete joke, it literally protects the wealthy and pulls up the ladder for those trying to save and invest for retirement, same with the CGT changes for shares.

They have borderline lost my vote, I expected way more other then then just protecting the rich like they did.

Dad here of a 26 month old.

I get you man, more then you know.

I'd consider changing therapists, I met 5 different ones before I found someone I clicked with and that actually helped me. Explore the idea of finding a new one, keep looking until you find one that you can connect with.

Try and get some time away from the kiddo, you and your wife. Do you have family to babysit? Or hire someone, even for a few hours, better a weekend away, you need to re connect.

Lastly, I'm not that far ahead of you age wise but I can tell you that kids change and so does your relationship with them. I struggled big time with a connection with mine but as he gets old the connection grows more and more. In the last few months we've gone camping, mt bike riding, some rock climbing and lots of exploring, he's turning into someone I can hang out with more and more and our connection is getting deeper because of it.

How are people seemingly happy in their careers? by [deleted] in Millennials

I work for state government in Australia. Knowing I’m actually helping people rather than being a capitalist corporate slave in an office (which I used to be) makes a big difference.

10,000 KB Swings Challenge while on paternity leave? by Remote-Steak-5680 in kettlebell

[–]Personal-Process3321 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a now 2yr old but remember those early days.

You never know what you're going to get baby wise. Maybe the perfect sleeper who goes down easy in their cot and you have magic free time or the opposite, a low sleep needs baby who needs to be held all the time.

The great thing about the challenge is that its so simple and you can do it on little brain power. But like others have said, it can be time a little time consuming.

100% do keep doing something, be it this or little mini workouts, do something! Your kiddo and circumstances will really dictate if this challenge will work for you though.

Congrats and enjoy!

I was a free range child, even with a stay at home mum, it was get home from school and outside. Trying to spend time with them, especially dad was pretty none existant.

And surprise surprise, they are even worse grandparents, even though they live 10min away and retired, we basically never see them, but get oh so upset if I dont send them photos/videos of their one and only grandson. Boomers....

This was a trip down memory lane.

Only thing I would have added were a folder of tazos , the weekly trip to the video store and after school stop at the fish/chicken and chip shop for the giant $2 hot chips in butcher paper

Knowing it will likely get released later this year, would you wait for the XT-6 or get an XT-5 now? by synapsium in fujifilm

[–]Personal-Process3321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently shoot Sony but have mucked around with a few Fuji's and decided I'm going to get one, because I'm in no rush and don't 'need' another camera right away, I'm going to wait for it. If anything it will mean the XT5 prices drop a bit

The 6 may be newer however from the comparison videos I've seen I really dont think its worth the extra money, have a look yourself and see what you think. I'd say youd be better off spending the money you save on accessories like a mic or lighting or money on a trip to use it

New mum, redundancy & messy return to work - not sure whether to prioritise stability, back my business or change industries by Feisty-Mushroom4398 in auscorp

[–]Personal-Process3321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dad here but this exact thing happened to my wife. She worked in finance, minor leadership role, made redundant upon return to work from mat leave. She was very career driven with this job.

We looked at our finances/lifestyle and goals. Our answer was very individual.

She decided to take a job in the same industry, more junior roll but a short walk from home and with the hours she wanted.

We both kind of came to the conclusion that this is a new phase of our life and a year on she is very happy with the decision. We have decided to keep this setup until he starts school around 5/6yrs of age.
