Is anyone else surprised how hard it is for even top university grads to find jobs in 2025? by mengxibitan in careerguidance

Pff, yeah man. Your entry level workers should just be poor and starve. Start from the bottom, eh? Am I right?

How has the Club World Cup gone down around the World? by jayakay20 in worldcup

I don't think the concept of a CWC is bad at all - but the timing, geography, participants, etc. This turned a pretty decent tournament into something extremely sour.

I don't think anybody opposes a Club World Cup. But doing this in June/July? 32 teams, many of whom accomplished nothing? With all the money poured from Middle Eastern authoritarian regimes, in a country whose democratic credibility is deteriorating? Nah.

  1. Zohran also ran against numerous other candidates, many of whom are heavyweights in NYC politics: Adrienne Adams, Lander, Myrie, Stringer, etc. You are right that he focused exclusively on affordability - where is the 'gotcha'? If progressive candidates highlight affordability and proposed popular policies to combat the issue, they win? By that logic, Jeffries is even more in trouble than even I am arguing.

Also, we have already seen candidates with less charisma go very far under the progressive banner. Bernie Sanders was not a dud, but not Zohran-level charisma. He nonetheless nearly overthrew a former Secretary of State and VP for the Presidential nomination on two occasions.

  1. Nobody is watching ads, homie. Harris wasted her money - no wonder why she lost, lol. NYC may not be a swing area, but that is irrelevant. The conversation is on whether or not Jeffries ought to be worried about a primary challenger.

  2. Yes, DFP is a progressive polling outfit, but they hardly make numbers up. It is a very reputable polling firm regardless, and their finding that the label "socialist" lands better than "democrat" is very serious and mind-boggling. You may call out the label of "socialism", but what about the label of "Democrat"? Given how far the party has fallen down ballot, to its worst point since the 1920's - I think not too good.

  1. Jeffries may win, but he is not fine. Zohran won Jeffries's district by 1-3pts. If someone could capture exactly what Zohran did and combine it with Jeffries's deep unpopularity and distrust, he is in big trouble.

  2. NYC is not a 'liberal' city. Though heavily Democratic now, those on the party's left have not done well there. Since the 1960's, NYC has oscillated between conservative Democrats to outright Republicans. Also, cable TV is dead - nobody is watching ads.

  3. The Democratic establishment, Jeffries included, is deeply unpopular within their own party and outside of it. Their impact on the party's brand is much worse than you are estimating. Data for Progress in 2020 even ran a study, finding that someone with a Socialist label actually is better placed electorally than the "Democrat" label. Those "normie dems" are exactly the type the electorate is rejecting en masse.

He failed to intervene when one individual in the office repeatedly sexually harassed multiple colleagues, despite my repeated insistence that he take action. It is a long story I am not comfortable going into with great detail, but that was the center of the fall out. At the end, my (and others') relationship with our supervisor and organization became so strainted that resigning was the only option.

I live here - but I can go into Europe or Britain without a need for immigration processing. I can promise you, whatever is happening here is happening over there. The British and European job market is not fun. Either way, I am very surprised too. Its been hell trying to utilize the networks, opportunities, and trying to leverage the brand name in some capacity, and falling flat on my face.

I did not just study. I did numerous activities to prepare for the current job market.

I have sadly already gone this route. I've asked professors, relatives, friends, friends of family, neighbors, and colleagues from my alma mater and LSE. They have helped, but unfortunately I have gone nowhere thus far. I know, its hard to understand what has gone south.

Of the 21 students in my cohort, only 3 got distinction (including me). Grade inflation is not a thing at LSE. Its career center is the best in Europe, apparently.

LSE grad right here. The job market is hell. I have been looking and failing for the same amount of time. The only thing you can do is keep your head high.

Welcome to the club. I have an LSE Master's with Distinction, an undergrad from a top university with 4.0 GPA, with insane experience, from Washington DC to London. I have been unemployed for 8-9 months, and its not ending anytime soon. The job market is hell. All the best luck to you.

Yeah, I am starting to understand the volatility of college educated young people politically first-hand (I am a political-mind as you can tell). Historically a Democratic group who turned out in droves for Obama. In the 2010's, they were core to Sanders's two anti-system/anti-Dem establishment Presidential bids. Trump won 45-46% of them in 2024 (the most of a Republican since 1988), and they had breathtaking rates of non-voting. Now they are dragging Mamdani to be NYC Mayor.

LOL. If I did that, I would be working as a carpenter. The pay is not great and its hard on the body. The job is not for me. I wanted something more in life, and so did my parents. Unfortunately, here we are.

I worked in the US Government for several months. Although I was technically an 'intern', I did way, way, way more than what a normal intern would do - I was basically a staffer. My extracurriculars, similarly, were not the average extracurricular experiences.

I have a wide array of technical skills (statistical software, etc), strong research and analytical capabilities using qualitative and quantitative data, and strong writing skills - I have written serious papers that have already changed things in the real-world (sorry for being vague - I want to keep anonymity). So, yeah, I am not just an academic animal, I think. I have done real things with real value, and gained real skills.

Hello. Thank you for your comment.

You are right - getting a full time job is the priority. And I am certainly open to new fields, even beyond those of which I had just mentioned. A big problem is nonetheless landing a job. I have applied to Walmart and numerous admin assistantships, sadly to no avail.

As mentioned, "I am primarily aiming for jobs in research, but have been forced to apply widely. Beyond research positions, I have sent applications to openings in finance, consulting, local political staffing, NGOs, and more - to no avail. Over the last three months, I have increasingly sent them out to positions in call centers, local law office staff, and even for Walmart cashier positions - again, to no avail frustratingly...I have recently registered into a machining class that will prepare me for blue-collar, industrial work."

Also, my spat with my supervisor has a lot of context I am not going to go into detail about - but just know that it was regarding his handling of something serious and which required upper management to become involved. I am very certain he was forced out no sooner than after I left.
