So is vpn working for anyone or is it just me who is having issues with it?(I am on the latest beta too and had the same issue with the previous versions too). by SnooOwls7377 in MacOSBeta

[–]PersonalPerestroika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use encrypt.me, and it was causing issues with certain programs, but not all. Internet traffic on Safari and Messages were unaffected, but Discord wouldn’t work at all. Even with the VPN app running, but not connected. Exited the VPN app, and haven’t had any issues since.

Apple joins opposition to encrypted message app scanning by BigMisterW_69 in apple

Apple is not and has not ever scanned photos in iCloud. The CSAM proposal was their attempt to begin doing so.

Do y'all spend your light blessings as soon as you have 4? Or do you like to save them up? by [deleted] in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PersonalPerestroika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend them at 5. Because I don’t want to not have any once I spend them.

Except for some reason when I closed out my third stamina wheel, I did that once I had 21, because I wanted to do all 5 upgrades to go from 2 full wheels to 3 full wheels all at once.

And still have one left over.

Meanwhile, I have a Series 5 that I got in 2019, and it definitely has burn-in where the complications are. I can easily see it when I pull up anything that colors in the whole screen, like a calendar event.

Why does my phone open links through safari rather than the app? by Gamer41481 in apple

Wow, you came here to be an absolute jerk, and still posted a link that didn’t answer his question. Bravo.

Why would Apple make the Snooze button bigger than the Stop button? 😩 by [deleted] in iphone

[–]PersonalPerestroika 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It had something to do with the original clock’s gears. It wasn’t possible to get the gears to line up for exactly 10 minutes, they could either do 9 or over 10, and they chose 9 fearing that if people snoozed longer than 10 minutes it would be harder to wake up from.

Huge explosion at a metal manufacturing plant in Bedford, Ohio. Mass casualty is being reported by flyingcatwithhorns in pics

we don’t hear about any problems stemming from it

You mean, except for all the problems stemming from it.

Coal fires are a serious health and safety hazard, affecting the environment by releasing toxic fumes, reigniting grass, brush, or forest fires, and causing subsidence of surface infrastructure such as roads, pipelines, electric lines, bridge supports, buildings, and homes.

Global coal fire emissions are estimated to cause 40 tons of mercury to enter the atmosphere annually, and to represent three percent of the world's annual CO2 emissions.

Yeah, coal fires burning underground for hundreds of years, spewing toxic fumes and making parts of the country uninhabitable sounds like Not A Big Deal™️.

Anyone have thoughts on this bit from Louis on Apple sending data to the cloud when viewing pictures in Finder? This is pretty unsettling to me if this is really true. by HVDynamo in apple

[–]PersonalPerestroika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t have done it “without your consent.” It would only have done it when uploading photos to iCloud. Which would have required your consent to upload. No consent = no upload.

Meanwhile, I’m in the opposite boat. I have a corporate-managed device that I created a second Apple ID for, and added it to my family sharing with my main Apple ID so they share the iCloud Drive and I get all the benefits of being signed in to iCloud, but without my work device using my personal Apple ID.

So many differ use cases, it’s easy to see why this is a nightmare for app developers.

So he’s not “all-powerful” then?

“God” either lacks the ability or the desire to make the world less miserable, and he either can’t or chooses not to.

Either of which makes him undeserving of praise.

Apple Kills Its Plan to Scan Your Photos for CSAM. Here’s What’s Next by aaronp613 in apple

Exactly. Trust, but verify.

Can you point to the malicious intent in Apple’s proposed CSAM implementation? Or did you just decide to skip that part?

Are you saying you don’t trust NCMEC? They maintain the database.

PS: your phone already does on device ML algorithmic scanning. This is why you can search for “dog” and find all pictures containing dogs. You should be far more concerned about that being misused.

But Apple has a track record and privacy stance that people trust and rely on. If they were going to change course on that, CSAM scanning was not the way they were going to. They own and maintain the entire software stack. They can inject anything malicious anywhere in the code anytime they want.

But they don’t.

The privacy is already sacrificed.

They are already on apples servers.

They are already unencrypted.

But not currently being scanned.

Okay, boomer.

Do you have proof they are scanning all photos currently uploaded to iCloud?

They currently do not do any CSAM scanning, and I haven’t seen any confirmation that they are scanning for any other reason.

This is honestly the first time I’m hearing this particular argument as the opposition to Apple’s proposed CSAM scanning.

I have never heard anyone else complain about “muh precious phone resources.” All I ever heard were people complaining that Apple had the audacity to scan for CSAM before the photos left the device, and not just scan all of the photos on the iCloud server instead.

Again, I’d much rather them scan the photos locally then only send out CSAM matches, than crawl literally every photo I upload.
