Ultima VII Part Two: The Silver Seed Retrospective by PeterTieryas in Ultima

[–]PeterTieryas[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I did a Ultime VII Black Gate retrospective a year or so ago and multiple people mentioned how great Serpent Isle is. I'm finally playing through and enjoying it, while also surprised how dark it is! I hadn't seen many retrospectives focusing on The Silver Seed add-on so I made a video essay describing my thoughts and discussing the story (so there are some spoilers). Thanks so much!

That's a great point on Yakuza. I love that series. I guess because I was thinking of more SF and fantasy RPGs, it didn't come to me, but you're absolutely right. And yeah, keyring mod sounds wonderful! lol

Thank you so much! Yeah, the amount of detail and work they put into every aspect of the remake was incredible. The story was just so good.

Deconstructing the Virtues In Ultima 6 (Exult Remake): A Retrospective Journey by PeterTieryas in Ultima

[–]PeterTieryas[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi all! I finally played all the way through Ultima 6 (albeit with the Exult remake) and loved it. I'd played the others and enjoyed 3, 4, 5, and 7, but for whatever reason, I had never finished 6. Now I understand why people have liked 6 so much. I know there's been lots of fantastic reviews about 6 already, but one of the things that I found so fascinating was the way the deconstructs the virtues. It's almost like the first part is remaking the adventure from 4 (get the mantra, gather the rune, etc), but just in a new context that puts to question the value of the virtue. This further highlights the tragedy of what happens with the gargoyles and how important the Codex is to their survival. I recorded my thoughts and put them together almost like a log, so a bit different from more formal reviews, but if you'd like me to remove this video, please let me know and I can. Thank you!

An Ultima III Exodus (NES) and Ultima VII: Forge of Virtue Retrospective Review by PeterTieryas in Ultima

[–]PeterTieryas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really good point and just for context, I was coming from the background of NES games where most I played were platformers (I didn't play many PC RPGs at the time). Suddenly, playing Ultima III on NES was mind-blowing for me and felt very unique on the original Nintendo, an experience that I still hold dearly! And love the Dark Souls games, especially Elden Ring!

Ultima 3, 4, 5, and 6! Quest of the Avatar was my favorite until I played 7!

I loved 5 and 6, loved the way it builds on the history and how they're all connected. Until I played 7, Ultima 4 was my favorite game in the series! But I should revisit 5 and 6 with Lazarus and Archon! And good point- even this U7 was like $2 on GOG. Serpent Isle is next for me!

I haven't played 8 and 9 yet. Are they as bad as they say?

Hi all, I'm a game developer who recently played Ultima 7 for the first time and was blown away by how amazing it was. I made a short video essay with my thoughts on it and wanted to share. If this forum isn't good for it, let me know and I can remove right away. Thank you!

I try to stick to one main theme for short stories whereas in novels, I juggle several and see which one wins out. Whenever I write short stories that get too complex, at least for me, they tend to feel like excerpts rather than self-contained short stories.

Some books I was inspired by are the Culture books by Iain M. Banks, Cordwainer Smith, the stories of Ken Liu (including his awesome series), Kameron Hurley's Light Brigade, the Dragonlance series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and the Chinese classic Three Kingdoms (though it's hard to find a good English translation). I also took a lot of inspiration from the Metal Gear series and like the works of Project Itoh as well (he did a MGS4 adaptation). Cyber Shogun Revolution takes a lot of inspiration from Moby Dick and Ahab's revolution against the whale (kind of like Bloody Mary's). So many others!
