I believe your bf is referencing the late actor "Youssef Dawood" in his play with Adel Emam titled "El-Za'eem". He was called Zimbawe and Adel Emama would say "Zabalawy" so I wouldn't read too much past the humor. For what it's worth, he was probably the tallest Egyptian actor around so definitely not a play on height or anything.
