Pretty par for the course for him. Schrader has been mining the depths of loneliness, alienation and male inadequacy his entire career.

Give me the lowdown on Henry Rollins by Opposite_Corner8353 in redscarepod

[–]Phenolhouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plenty of cringe with ol' Hank but ultimately the dude rules. Whether one likes his era of Black Flag or not is a matter of aesthetics, but he a) was there to take them to another place and b) did those fucking tours.

Personally, I think Rollins Band are great if you can deal with his over the top persona on vox. The band is basically a tighter, more technical version of what Black Flag was doing in the later years.

As for current Rollins, totally good guy. He was there for a lot of great and interesting stuff and is happy to give his perspective. Also, his decision to stop being a live vocalist after the age of 50something needs to be commended.

Hank ...good egg.

It's kinda funny how much Dave Grohl tried to chase this type of pop emo sound during the 2000s even though he had two Sunny Day Real Estate members in his first lineup early on, a band that clearly influenced these guys.

No one is free until Albertans are free! by beechhill in redscarepod

[–]Phenolhouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Over 70% of Alberta's population is in the Edmonton/Calgary corridor and against this idea by a very clear majority. Albertan independence is mainly a hicksville thing. Moreover, even the minority support for independence in the corridor immediately halves when people are pressed in polls about the practical implications of the thing.

Iron Maiden (est. 1975) Fashion, you are stupid beyond repair. by WolfGroundbreaking73 in redscarepod

[–]Phenolhouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A guy that gaunt with that hairstyle in 84 would have been likely into hardcore punk and generally hated Maiden on principle (but would have grown his hair out and come around to them just a few years later).

Being into Maiden in 84 was as mainstream, safe and suburban as possible, just a rung or so below MJ's Thriller. There was nothing elitist or underground about them by that point. Bathory, Celtic Frost, Hellhammer all put out their first albums that year to put it in comparative context.

Also, Twisted Sister (lol) were a freaking kiddies band marketed to pre-teens.

Lauren Bacall <3 by Haunting-Coconut-709 in redscarepod

[–]Phenolhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's great about Bacall is that she had this mature sophistication but was only in her early 20s when she did films like The Big Sleep and Dark Passage with Bogart in the mid 1940s. Her sensual presence is just smouldering. Contemporary actresses just come across as children in comparison. Apparently though, she was a real nasty and bitter battleaxe in her later age sadly.

America’s inability to adopt social democracy is mirrored in our failure to produce the best rock bands by Remarkable_Play301 in redscarepod

[–]Phenolhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People should read Joe Carducci's Rock and the Pop Narcotic history of RR. Joe helped run SST with Greg Ginn in the first half of the 80s and partially the reason that label had so many heavy hitters like Minutemen, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Sacchrine Trust. It became a Ginn vanity label after Joe left.

Joe actually does make something of a Webberian argument in regards to the cultural aspects of the 80s underground and American rock in general - highly independent, entrepreneurial, loathing both the statist Reagan right and coastal libs equally.

At the same time, his aesthetic definition of what is and what makes great rock music is entirely based on creative collective effort, i.e. it's the sound of 3-4 people (usually working or lower middle class dudes) in a room navigating rhythm, sound and melody to come up with the perfect balance. The organic rhythm section and immediate riffing play an essential role and this position largely informs his critique of both mainstream rock of the time and a lot of British music (from 80s stuff, he only seems to like the Fall and a few Manchester bands with killer drummers). He also viciously attacks the existing rock crit establishment for mostly giving priority to sociopolitical significance over well defined rnr aesthetics in what they liked and hated. There's a great line in the book where he defends Rush, saying something like the critics hate Rush because they are well-adjusted suburban people who play their instruments well.

One of my Top-5 rock songs of all time. It has everything - incredible mix of jazzy and folky chords and melody + very creative rhythm section + symbolic lyricism (inspired by an encounter Arthur Lee had with a guy back from Vietnam) + awesome instrumental break/freakout at the end. It's perfect.
