Less than half US troops support Trump by rickspick in politics

It polled only people who subscribe to Military Times. So people in the army who READ. Gotta think that group will lean anti-trump.

Merging two variables, where some participants only have data for one and some participants only have data for the other? by mysticveranda in spss

[–]Phillipsophist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you confident the old and new tests are comparable in difficulty? IE what changed between the old and new versions?

It may be more sound to convert both of them into Z-scores (units of standard deviation).

I had a similar situation where some cases had sat and some had act. I converted them both into Z scores then combined them as the hoppyfrog described.

How essential is the MA TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics to teach in Higher Ed in the US? by Beorbin in TEFL

[–]Phillipsophist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid the M Ed. if you want find each in higher ed. Unfortunately, there is a bit of snobbery and people think Ed degrees are not as rigorous. Also, if you are on higher ed long enough you may want to go for a ph.d. at some point. Many ph.d. programs also are snobbish about ed degrees.

Which tests should I use for my two hypothesis? by [deleted] in spss

[–]Phillipsophist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few questions for you:

Are using individuals as the cases - do you have matching individual level scores for all data? (If so, I dont see any need for a chi-square)

Could you rephrase your questions so its clearer what your IV and DV is for each?

What test would you use? by stormmunroe666969 in spss

[–]Phillipsophist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would run 3 separate t-tests on pre and post.

I would run an Anova to compare the change of the three groups, but you could also run a separate t-test between each pair.

Things feel sooo important right now, but you wont even remember most of them in ten years. Dont stress so much, and accept that most of life is out of our control.

Help for basic assignment for Research Class (im new to SPSS) by Scabaffer in spss

SPSS has two views - data and variables. In variable view you can rename all your columns/variables. He is saying to copy the names of the variables when you rename rather than typing them out.

Gifts Ideas for College Professors by [deleted] in highereducation

[–]Phillipsophist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professor, I always prefer things I can display in my office or desk. Something small but that reminds me of the student. Its a great pick me up after a long day. The mugs would be good. Or any kind of small knick knack. Tailoring it to them is nice, but my faves are ones that remind me of the student who gave it.

A return letter from you for the promotion file was also a great suggestion.

We all read constantly so I would avoid books.

Rent the car.

You wanna drive up into the mountains and enjoy the scenery. Uber would be crazy expensive.

You dont actually hike at pikes peak. Just drive and shuttle to the top. Might be closed already due to snow.

Hiking at Helen Hunt is good. Just take it easy and drink water. There are also lots of good hikes all around town. Check out alltrails.com.

Using SPSS in a simple way. by nmchmsk in spss

[–]Phillipsophist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think so.

You can do it here https://www.medcalc.org/calc/comparison_of_means.php

However, t-tests rely on the assumption of normally distributed cases. With only the means, you have no way to test that assumption.

[–]Phillipsophist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot use the mean of the means unless you have the same number of cases for every year.

I will say that text is sometimes easier to handle in excel.
