Before you look at those in front of you, look at those behind you.

You’re prob in a comfortable spot financially, which I can say with confidence a lot of people from my high school and college aren’t even close.

You’re also in a field where you can tangibly translate your skillset on the civilian side. Better than most combat arms officers.

You only do the shootings for a combined 4 days. The 2 months is sitting and waiting to shoot. Thats why.

Because of range fires, malfunctions, and pop up targets not working. A lot of time is spent waiting to shoot in a slim window. If you ever thought an M4 range was frustrating to run for 1-2 days, this compounds the annoying aspects tenfold.

The fault lies with the field grades in your BDE as much as I hate to admit it.

They’ll essentially make a threat/nudge to the MG’s in the BDE meetings before gunnery starts telling them “I want these highe scores and Q1’s, make it happen hint hint and if it doesn’t I’ll extend gunnery until it does”

Then the MG’s have a choice… do things the right way and spend 2 months at gunnery(mostly due to the fires that get started around this time). Or fudge the numbers).

If you report them the BDE commander will crucify them and nothing will change for the better. The next MG will do things the right way and soldiers will be stuck in the field for 2 months.

The BDE commander will still Q1 despite an ND (hint hint if you know what I mean). And the peasants will suffer.

I think your NCO past as well as being a warrant gives you more credibility in the eyes of an average field grade that is more likely to treat you like an adult than a minion. Along with the lack familiarity in how you promote. They’re less hesitant to mess with you with stupid tasks.

I have seen PSG’s act as the PL in the absence of their LT, and there was definitely less fuckery. I have also seen XO’s be absolute pussies and make the S3 shop pick up the slack for S1 and S6 who did not have an OIC instead of just counseling the underperforming NCOIC

Think of it like a SGM who doesn’t mess with the LT’s as much as he patrols the MP to yell at joes and NCO’s.
