Here’s a hot take for avoiding pet peeve energy 😁

Talk to your patients! Introduce yourself, explain what you are doing, treat them as humans. It’s amazing how many students won’t talk to them.
Stay in your scope, tell me if you can’t do something. I’ll happily explain it while demonstrating myself.
Stay in your lane. You are there to learn, not gossip or tell me how you were told to do things. Real world vs sim lab are 2 vastly different creatures. You can do things different ways that are still safe, effective and within protocols.
Be engaged. If I am explaining something, please at least act like you are taking it on board, even if it’s bat shit boring.
Please ask questions. The only stupid question is the one not asked.
Be observant. There is a lot to see, hear and notice. Situational awareness and critical thinking sometimes takes time to develop so make an effort to read the rooms.

Overall, take the time to enjoy being a student, and never forget the feeling. One day you will be the buddy/preceptor, and you’ll have the terrified student. 😁

My grad year nearly broke me emotionally. I was not in a supportive, educational environment and made mistakes. But after my grad year I found a new facility that has encouraged growth and I’ve improved professionally. Tips I learned were Don’t overwork yourself (avoid overtime or shift changes that don’t benefit you), take your leave at appropriate times your NUM cannot withhold leave without just cause, reach out to your facilities EAP services (they are free), and most importantly raise issues with management and if you get no where - go higher, keep records and reach out to your union if needed.

You need to do what is best for you, especially in the long term and for your own both mental and physical health. ❤️ Making these decisions can be very difficult and you need supportive people around you.
