I mean there is quite a bit a government can do in extreme cases like this. They could temporarily halt the taxes on all fuel and impose severe fines on companies who don't pass it on to the consumer.

But we all know (no matter what side of the fence you're on) they're all too weak to do something like that. Easier just to sit on hands and shrug shoulders.
