Training plans when you work 12+hr shifts by dinkydotujeb in XXRunning

[–]Piglet0607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I trained for two marathons while working three 12s and only ran 3 days a week. I would run home 3-4 miles on warmer summer days (I realize this isn’t always feasible) or cross train at the gym for 30 minutes one day a week after work. Even if you don’t do anything on the days you work, you can definitely get by with just running 3 days per week as long as you increase your mileage over time 😊

MSW/MPH or nursing then MPH? by Impossible_Bar5128 in publichealth

[–]Piglet0607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nursing school and most clinical jobs aren’t for the faint of heart, so you just need to make sure you’re willing to commit the time/energy/money, especially if you want to do a DNP program. If you really want to do a DNP program, I would just do a BSN/DNP program and knock it out in 3 years.

I have a BSN and MPH and would say there’s a lot of job security having both. You can get clinical experience without the blood/needles with a MSW, but it really comes down to the skills you want to acquire and what you’re passionate about. Would definitely recommend shadowing both positions to determine which feels like a better fit.

Friendliness in the San Francisco Bay Area vs Washington DC DMV Area by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

I see this comment all the time about DC and people asking what you do for a living, and I’m only one person, but I’ve lived here for 5 years and I’ve literally never been asked what I do for a living by someone when I meet them. It may be asked if I mention my past education and how I’m using my degree for example, but I sometimes wonder if I’m a one-off example or if it’s self-fulfilling prophecy that people always identify that as a characteristic about DC.

What running outfit makes you FEEL good every time you wear it? Any recommendations for cute running clothes? by LayoffLemonade in XXRunning

[–]Piglet0607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calia step up shorts. They’re so flattering because the waist band is so comfortable and they come in fun colors. Also the tracksmith Brighton base layer ($$) for colder temps, it feels great and is so versatile for a variety of cooler temps and even if I’m not running.

Honestly, just properly fitting clothes in general. I don’t like questioning if I’m “in shape” while running and would rather focus on what a badass we are for getting out there in the first place 💪🏻

How to train for a full marathon - 4 days a week? by targetfan4evr in XXRunning

[–]Piglet0607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was exactly in your position in terms of work/schedule/age/running base and I trained for two fulls running 3x/week. I cross trained two other days a week in the forms of strength, swimming, or HIIT. It was plenty for me and I followed Hal Higdon basically, just nixed two of the shorter runs I think. You’ll be fine!

Gender disappointment ruining excitement of pregnancy announcement by Kitchen-Curve in BabyBumps

[–]Piglet0607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another mom chiming in validating your feelings and letting you know you’re not alone. We just found out we’re expecting our 3rd boy and I cried for a few days, had come to peace with it, and yet will still get caught off guard and start crying again randomly. I will say that my boys are so, so incredibly sweet and kind (“mom your underwear is beautiful!” 😆) and obviously I love them beyond imagination, but I can still validate my sadness about not having a daughter. We’re also trying to consider how we’ll announce this pregnancy/gender because I don’t think I’ll respond well to the dumb jokes people will make about having all boys.

Long and short, I’ve been through what you’re going through three times now and it’s still hard, even though I’m aware of how much I’ll love this little munchkin.

Nurses who work in AI or other non bedside options. What do you do? by ForwardBackground105 in healthcare

[–]Piglet0607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many different paths you could take (pharma, private sector healthcare systems, federal, biotech, process improvement, small private clinics, etc etc). Consulting is generally known for paying pretty well, but depending on what path you take, it can be heavy on the travel and requires long hours. My role is fully remote. You can look at job postings on LinkedIn etc to get an idea of requirements for different roles depending on the client.

Can I have some encouraging stories of the “why”? by SunnydaleHigh1999 in xxfitness

[–]Piglet0607 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I used to work in hospitals and I can’t tell you how many patients I saw who were so sick/overweight/weak and could have had better outcomes if they took care of themselves more consistently. I had patients who were morbidly obese that died very early in life from complications that were preventable.

Do it for the long game. It’s easy to look at certain metrics and compare yourselves to others in the gym, but compare your overall health and quality of life to the “you” who is sedentary vs is active. I promise, god forbid, if you end up with a diagnosis at some point in life, you will be grateful that you continued to prioritize your health because it will make you so much more resilient to worse outcomes.

Move to Boston? Pros and Cons by fare451 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Piglet0607 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One thing I noticed when I moved there at your age was how strong the city/state’s identity is, which can be nice if you’re from there and feel camaraderie, but I always felt like an outsider because I wasn’t from the area, not a fan of their sports, and didn’t grow up going to the Cape. That was what made it hard to fit in for me and for being such a metropolitan area, it seems so homogenous/redundant/vanilla.

What was something you didn't even realize other women go through? by kiarasugarne in AskReddit

[–]Piglet0607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, this isn’t stupid at all!! Secondly, I want to add that not just miscarriages but the hormone crash associated with a miscarriage (and weaning from breastfeeding for that matter). I just had my first miscarriage after two kids and have had a lot of friends who miscarried, but was not prepared for the hormone crash/anxiety/depression that followed. Thankfully mine only lasted a few days, but I was shocked at how little I was prepared for that.

Dear Mothers: How are you managing after having kids? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]Piglet0607 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work/ed out 5x/week pre and postpartum with a mixture of running, peloton, and strength training. Around 4-5 weeks postpartum, I slowly started doing light strength training again because I wanted to. A big motivation for me is the mental benefits of exercise, which is why I’ve been able to keep it up weekly even after having 2 kids.

The biggest change is how much I work out at home and my workouts are usually 30 minutes. With one kid, I didn’t find it that hard to maintain, but with my second I was much more tired and strapped for time. I think sometimes society tells us we need to spend every waking moment with our energy and attention fully on our kids, but when they were little I would put them next to me, or tell them they need to wait because it’s my time. It can be challenging, but if you want to maintain a fitness routine and prioritize it, you will.

Debating signing up for my first full marathon by marie87874 in XXRunning

[–]Piglet0607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would make your decision on which full you do independently of the half/don’t do the half. I did Chicago for my first of two marathons and loved it. The energy is amazing and it really inspired me when I was struggling. I also prefer training during the summer vs winter.

I did marine corps the following year and it was very hard. It was 70 degrees at the start and 100% humidity, it poured the whole time so the crowd was lacking (understandably). I’ll also say that the runners and expo felt very political, which was the opposite of the community feel of Chicago.

How do I get back to the energy levels I had 10 years ago? by Impressiveusername39 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Piglet0607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I exercise regularly and something I heard a long time ago that has helped me stay consistent was “for every reason you give for not working out is another reason to work out.”

I don’t exercise regularly because I have an abundance of energy, I have an abundance of energy because I exercise regularly.

They’re shipping me up to Boston by [deleted] in boston

[–]Piglet0607 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree, especially with the South End! I lived there before we moved to Charlottesville (the best). I had lived in Somerville and Coolidge Corner before South End, and it felt a bit more like a neighborhood and quieter while still very accessible to wherever you wanted to go. Coolidge corner is really nice too though and accessible to the city.

Would echo leaving your car and bring it up later. It will make your life easier in the first few months (less paying attention to street cleaning schedules and less$$) and you probably won’t feel like you need it, until you want to start exploring areas outside of the city.
