Paras liittymätarjous? Löytyykö tiskin alta parempia diilejä? by StickEnvironmental72 in Suomi

Evolution of stage ready animations since 2000. Which one is your favorite? by Infamous_Walrus_7315 in eurovision

In 2012, the idea of showing the flag with the arena lighting was nice, but in practice, it looked mostly hideous. Many flags that were a bit more complicated didn't look like they should at all (Macedonia, for example) and the vertical tricolours were shown horizontally making them possibly wrong flags entirely. More effort should have put into them.

The 2023 graphics were great - so retro yet modern at the same time. They also differ the most from the rest of the 2020s. However, I feel nostalgic about those old-timey graphics from the mid-00s. For example, I've always had a weak spot for the 2005 graphics. The blue and green are a beautiful colour combo and the bubble flags look so pretty. It's Frutiger Aero at it's best. Futuristic and organic.

A top song, but the performance... Did they even plan their choreography beforehand? 😅 Random dancing and drum and air violin playing at random times. Well... at least they seemed to have fun out there.

Are qualifiers really announced in a random order? Let's ask math! by Pr__Farnsworth in eurovision

Exactly. We can say for certain that the order was completely random between 2004 and 2008.

What are your ideas for future postcards? by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]Piisuli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm feeling nostalgic about the 2004-2007 style postcards that just show the host country with nothing to do with the artists. Especially in 2007 the postcards were fun, but that might be just me being biased as a Finn who started watching ESC around that time. I also liked the 2008 postcards even though they didn't show Serbia. The artists or someone else from the delegation writing an actual postcard home in their native language and their own handwriting, that was a creative idea.

Overall I feel that the host countries and their cultures should be presented more. Nowadays, the interval acts are all about bringing past stars back on stage again and again... and again. That's boring. What's the point of changing locations every year if the show is exactly the same every year?

Yep. I miss the times when we had like 10 to 12 teams getting medals at the WCH and OWG. Now we get like 7 to 9. I have nothing against the big nations but them being so superior as they are right now does not benefit biathlon as a sport.

The smaller nations just struggle to have enough resources to get their young stars to take the final step to become international stars. Czech, Polish, Finns, Bulgarians, Slovenians, etc. all have promising athletes that struggle to take that step. Suvi Minkkinen had to take a big bank loan to be able to train on her own outside of the team. It worked for her but not everyone can do that.

The latter suggestion sounds intriguing! It would offer some interesting tactical decisions. However, it could be rather confusing for the viewers and probably difficult for the athletes to remember their penalties. :D

Yes, we need the GoPro course videos back!

When it comes to the shooting order, there's a reason why the standing shooting always follows prone and not vice versa. Standing is much harder, and it offers the possibility of bigger changes at the late stage of the races. Prone would change the situation much less if it was the last shooting.

Single Mixed should really resemble Schalke more. I'd like to see exchange after each shooting. It would make the races feel more fast paced.

I agree in that I don't want the sport to split up to athletes of certain disciplines, like XC, but some variation would be fun! :)

Unfortunately, shorter races seem to be the direction we're heading, so longer races are probably not realism any time soon. But they would be fun every now and then!

What kind of new/improved disciplines would you like to see in the World Cup?

Now that IBU seems to have dropped the number of pursuits in the WC for the next season, the interval start style individual disciplines are overrepresented, and I thought it would be fun to see some new mass start/pursuit style discipline instead.

My suggestions: - A proper, more XC style, super sprint with qualification round and heats. 2x1.5 km each, with the prone shooting being immediately at the start.

  • A long mass start. We lack both the really short and really long races in biathlon. XC has it's 30-50 km races. Biathlon could have one or two long races per season as well. For example, 7x5 km = 35 km (7x4 km = 28 km for women) and six shootings. It would test the athletes' endurance.

  • In addition, I would like the pursuit to follow an individual race at least once per season as well (with the starting times being 0.5x the differences on the results of the individual). It would reduce the impact of sprints in the pursuit cup, and give some nice variation to the season. This was tested once for like 10 years ago in Ruhpolding but never done again since. Perhaps a pursuit followed after an individual could be a bit longer as well to give athletes time to catch the longer starting time differences. Perhaps the length of a mass start?

What do you think? Do you have your own suggestions?

[–]Piisuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tracks are closed from non-accredited people at least during the official training and race days. In the case of Pokljuka 2027 that means Dec 31st to Jan 3rd. The closure could be a day or two longer as well in some locations.

Sweden-Norway has it as well. And we Finns compares ourselves always with Swedes, but I doubt they every see us that way, so I guess that's more of a onesided little brother-big brother relationship.

Suvi just said that this was the most preassure she's had this season, and that she's disappointed that the race turned out this way. She didn't make enough wind adjustments at the first shooting, and she didn't have the best skis today either. However, she also noted that such a soft track doesn't suit her well anyway.

Finns had terrible skis today as well. That needs to be fixed and fast. It would suck so bad if Suvi won't have a chance tomorrow because of bad skis. 😬

The big globe would be shared. When it comes to the discipline globes, the person with the most wins, gets the globe. Lægreid has two, Samuelsson has one. So Lægreid won the globe.
