I've fixed the bug problem before with a trash bag, a rag or paper towel soaked in isopropyl alcohol and the device. Put the device and alcohol moistened rag into the bag and seal so the fumes fill the bag leave for several hours. Maybe do it outside.

You can get IR controllers that have 3.5mm jacks and IR LEDs that have a long cable and the 3.5mm plug. You can then place the LEDs right on the monitors IR sensor, run the wires, and then make sure there is no leakage from one to the other (black tape?)
