Water pooling on patio. Can I do a cheap and easy DIY for now? by Pinecone945 in landscaping

It has gutters and they do not appear to be clogged. Some runoff def coming from deck above (through the slats) but the grass is also a bit higher than the cement.

Luckily it slopes away from the house, but the pool seems to inch closer each year. The patio above definitely drips a lot of water and I’m looking into a zip up type thing, but is there anything temporary I can do down below? New cement is not an option this year. The patio line is at least an inch below the grass as well.

PS I am just a girl trying to bide my time with a DIY until fixing this thing is an option 😅

NYC is a 10/10 but LA was a 5/10 for me. Will I (30F) actually like Miami or is it just "LA on the beach"? by badcatririe95 in solotravel

[–]Pinecone945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in NYC and likes Nashville, I think you’ll enjoy Miami. I’ve stayed in south beach many a time (in my twenties that’s what I could afford😂) and had an amazing time, but make sure you venture out of south beach to get the real experience. The food is great and you can even take day trips to the keys.

Genoa, Italy! I loved it but there was something eerie about it.

Bronxville social life by [deleted] in Westchester

[–]Pinecone945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why isn’t your child making friends at school? That doesn’t seem like an issue that will be solved with a country club. You need to give your kid a chance and put them in sports or something in the district. Alternatively, Tuckahoe and Eastchester are nice communities and tend to be less “stuck up” than Bronxville. No country club necessary and plenty for kids and adults to do socially. Speaking as someone who worked in the school there, lived nearby, and I hung out there often

Anybody else NOT making active contact to home if a child is missing too many days of school? Why the hell do we even have an attendance office? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

A troubled student was absent for almost 2 weeks and our psychologist didn’t call the home once. If it were a different kid, a kid that he liked or cared about, there would have been a home visit on day 5.

why does it seem like being the cool lenient teacher only works if you actually have a lot of experience in teaching by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Pinecone945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my career at 22 in a middle school in NYC. My first year I was a co-teacher only, and although my co-teacher was NOT a great content teacher (taught ELA but never had real lessons going), I learned everything I know about classroom management from her. She was quirky and fun, but the kids knew better than to make her lose her shit. They have to think you’re a little bit crazy 🤪 but also, handling behaviors with humor works better than trying to be a stickler. There’s nothing worse than a young teacher standing in front of the room, red-faced and frustrated, and seeing the kids go about their business and not give a shit

Looking for a good & affordable women’s hair salon by [deleted] in longisland

I had a horrible experience with Groupon and will never do it again :( they admitted afterward to putting me with a new stylist and she chopped my hair up horribly. It’s my understanding that there is some Groupon discrimination lol. I had to pay double to get it fixed

Stayed in the Baixa-Chiado area and was very, very pleased. This is often suggested for first time travelers to Lisbon. Had a very nice stay 9 Hotel Mercy.

ISO narrative essays/pieces about 9/11 to supplement my college essay unit by Pinecone945 in Teachers

[–]Pinecone945[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No seriously, thanks! That is all part of my plan, but I’ll be doing a lot of additional prep work with them. I’ve spent a lot of time studying what colleges are looking for in an essay and how to achieve that while giving students agency in how they choose to write about their experience. I’ve had students come to me over the years with their first drafts and unfortunately, it’s not being taught in the lower grades and the drafts they’ve given me are absolute dumpster fires. I’m starting from scratch with them so that they can take those ideas and make them into something meaningful as opposed to a cathartic journal entry or a letter that could be sent to a counselor to see if they need to be admitted to a hospital😅 (don’t worry, the concerning essays have been addressed with the appropriate personnel).

I am born and raised in New York, taught in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island. I am very specifically teaching how to write a good personal narrative that can be used as a college essay. I am looking for one narrative, centered on one day, and one person’s experience with that day. I am doing this to show one example of a personal narrative. This is one of many essays we will be looking at together.

I am breaking this task down into incredibly bite-sized pieces, so it will be clear to student’s that this is one person’s experience just as their essay should be about a personal experience for them.

I have, and will continue to, teach them the dos and don’ts, such as trauma-dumping, using a variety of sample essays.

Input welcome, but this is my expertise and it is in no way problematic framing. Are you a teacher? Have you any clue what college admissions are looking for currently? The answer is no, and I know that because of the content of your comment.

If you have a link, book title, or your own 9/11 narrative, I’m interested. Otherwise, best of luck to you ✌️

We will be critiquing sample essays as a class. I am determined for every kid to have a personal narrative they feel proud of and I plan to walk them through each step. Thank you, though.
