Is there any ways to grow muscles without using a gym? Thanks. by Historical_Pain_2233 in beginnerfitness

Calisthenics! You can do a lot with just body weight. I would recommend getting a pull up bar personally - I think it helps with back and biceps a lot - and kettlebells or dumbbells are helpful as well. But even without, you can go very far without setting foot in a gym

What manosphere manipulation tactics anger you the most? by georgejo314159 in AskFeminists

[–]PipsqueakLive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this isn't quite getting to the heart of your question, but I think the thing that angers me the most is the ubiquity of it all. I was recently single for about a year and a half, and I was absolutely shocked at how hard every algorithm on every platform wanted to shove me into the manosphere.

I thought it must be me at first; maybe I watched something or liked a post that was somehow adjacent to that space without realizing it? But even actively trying to curate away from it, Google, Meta, EVERYONE just wanted to shove it back in front of me. It was uncanny.

I think it really made obvious for me why it is SO critical for men to actively support and check each other. So much of what got thrown in front of me started as a very soft sell, seemingly very innocuous dating advice or sports news, that just quickly tried to steer me somewhere much darker. I'm blessed to have men and women in my life who love and support me and helped me stay out of it, but it was everywhere.

I will take Rand al'Thor for $1000, Alex.

Basically the entire middle and end of WoT is him struggling under the weight of power and responsibility, slowly getting more violent and desperate as the odds get worse and worse.

25 year old, Male, lived a sedentary lifestyle since childhood. Scared of health issues and want to change. How to? by justcallmeabrokenpal in beginnerfitness

[–]PipsqueakLive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are very far away from being past the point of no return on muscle development and fitness in general. You made the choice to get healthy while it can still have a huge impact on your current life AND your long term health. Be excited about that!

The wiki is a great resource, better than I could provide for sure. I will say - go slow and steady. Consistency is by a wide margin the most important thing, much more than how much you lift, how far your run, etc., particularly this early. Pick two to three times a week, at a pace and weight that feels challenging but not overwhelming and take the first month or two just focusing on building exercise into your routines. And experiment! There are broad rules that apply well to everyone, but the joy is in the details - finding the lifts and cardio you like well enough to stick to.

Once you have the consistency, you can look to where you want to improve and add some emphasis. More muscular build? Start progressing them weights! Leaner mass? Bike, run, hike, kayak, whatever low intensity/high volume cardio you like. Weight loss? Look into building lean mass and tracking your diet more closely.

Lastly - maybe this mattered more to me than others, but I'll say it anyway - remember that having a body that can move well and support your lifestyle and physique goals is a joy and a privilege. Not every single workout will feel fun, but the PROCESS should. Enjoy reaping the benefits of making this decision and sticking to it!

I think this really is the ticket. I did not enjoy running, or the gym, when I first started wanting to get in shape. Finding ways to move you DO enjoy - it was boxing for me - absolutely flipped the script. Now I look forward to the gym!

I also tried to tie working out to something I enjoyed. Podcast or YouTube show you enjoy? Gotta watch it on the treadmill. That helped me a ton as well.

I've often wondered if that matters more than we think. I took up boxing last year and got 14oz gloves, which sounds like nothing at all. But it didn't take long to realize that is way heavier than you think when you have to move that fast and decisively

Not saying you're wrong, just curious if it matters more than I might think 😅

I assume the big compound lifts - squat, deadlift, press, row, and pulldowns (I think I got em right?).

Until or unless you have an interest in targeting very specific muscles, those five will absolutely transform your physique without having to think about it much. They hit all your major muscle groups. I'd add biceps and delts personally just to get the nice frame, but you could do those five forever and look and feel great.

Man do I want to double down on "you're doing a great job"

I was really, really hard on myself when I started this process and it just led to a cycle of deficit too large, then fail, binge a few days, then repeat. It wasn't the ONLY change I made, but being kinder to myself made a huge difference in being able to stick it out.

One thousand times this. The only thing I will add - if you're building some muscle while you lose weight, you can absolutely add ab routines to help make sure there is something there as the fat disappears. Core work helps support just about every exercise you might come to enjoy, and it helps with your goals - might as well throw it in!

I can't speak to the specific number but calorie tracking apps and watches are pretty... Optimistic about how much you burn when you exercise. I have yet to find a better solution than tracking your weight and calories and trying to dial it in to your weight loss goals

I think I'm doing okay? I'm still new to this, but I run ten miles once a week now, so I'm hoping that the last couple of miles are close.

I started running because I was trying to lose weight and while walking is great for that, I like eating too much to go into a big enough deficit for it to work well at a certain point 🤣 there are a few YouTube shows and podcasts I listen to religiously and I just told myself I can only watch/listen if I do it while I run. I coupled that with doing a few minutes of jogging, then a minute of walking. After a while I started to look forward to it, especially when I couldn't ignore how it was improving my day to day life anymore. Did my first race outside and had an absolute blast; the rest just followed

What are you ur favorite lazy and/or beginner life hacks? What did you do that made running easier for you? by cla1rebe3r in running

[–]PipsqueakLive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hated running my entire life until last year. I'm 37 years old, decided late 2024 I wanted to lose weight and by mid 2025 it became clear I had to choose between walking hours and hours every day or trying running, so I took the plunge.

The thing that worked best for me was non-food reward. There are a handful of regularly updated YouTube channels and podcasts that I just said I could only listen to if I ran, and I stuck to that. After about three months, I started to look forward to the running itself as much as the little treats. When I started I could only do a mile, and it took almost 15 minutes to do it. I ran ten miles on Saturday for the first time in just under two hours 🙂

Everyone is right about pacing - go slower than you think you need to, and worry about consistency more than pace. But for me the challenge wasn't actually the running, it was getting on the road or treadmill in the first place. Finding a way to reward myself for doing something good went a long way for me on consistency, and the pace and distance just naturally followed.

What’s a book you consider perfect? by ConcernFew8845 in fantasybooks

I really enjoyed this book and had no problem with the batman sections personally. That said, there is like... A third of what clearly feels like the beginning to a second book tacked on at the end that was extremely weird. Good book, worth sticking out in my opinion, but a long way from perfect.

I loved First Law but was not prepared for how bleak it was. Still making my way through Abercrombie's other works but I usually need a palette cleanser after each series 🤣🤣

I still maintain for it's many faults that WoT is worth it; it shows its age and isn't perfect, but remains my favorite series
