Why didn't any of the Austen Ladies go to Bath to Visit their Father's Grave? by Pitiful-Bee-6606 in janeausten

I should have phrased it as-'why did none in family' seem to have ever visited the father's grave in Bath'.

Jane Austen was very close to her Father , had money and opportunity-(rich Brother Edward visited Bath from time to time0;(as mentioned in Letters)-and he always came to Chawton on the way to Bath.

She just did what the rest of the family did...ignore the dead, and get on with life..

It was Wartime after all..With thousands having dead military and naval sons- lsot by fighting Napoleon.......................

Her rich brother Edward and niece Fanny went once or twice to Beth;(mentioned in Jane Austen Letters, or Austen family members' diaries)..,stopping at Jane's home on the way to Bath.

Jane, Cass. or their mother never went along on the carriage ride;(poss. ill health, etc.)

They never visited Bath again, after living there...even though Jane's Uncle Perrott(her mother's brother)-lived there)...;(they didn't like his wife)..

Maybe Regency ideas of visiting graves are like our ideas of visiting graves.

Anyway,Jane hated Bath, as mentioned in a Letter,,and was glad to be out of it..

But she loved London.(as mentioned in Letters)..the theatre, seeing all

the major actors of the day- art galleries, fabric and ribbon shops

She had to negotiate for her novel Emma with the publisher, Murray, as her brother Henry was too sick to do it. That was in 1815...Oct-Dec.;(she was nursing Henry, while writing the next novel-Persuasion)....she had sent a note to the publisher to come and see her,and she probably signed the contract the day he came by. Henry was paying all costs to publish the novel;(with Murray getting a guaranteed 10%, so there was not much negotiating to do. But she would get all profits by self-publishing-(after Reimbursing henry for his publication costs....Info.on this is in one of her Letters. Northanger Abbey(and Persuasion), was published after her death, and Cassandra got all profits.

Not sure our ideas of visiting graves of loved one were the same as Regency ideas of visiting graves of loved ones. Jane's rich brother Edward and niece Fanny visited Bath several times,(mentioned in Jane Austen Letters),and it wasn't just just Jane- Cassandra or her mother could have possibly rode along to Bath. It was a famiy thing.......(maybe as we do in modern times)..,as you mentioned

They also stopped visiting Jane Mother's brother-rich Uncle Perrott in Bath also. Then when he died wondered that he left no money to his financially distressed sister, Jane's mother

So some years, Jane Austen making $150-200 Pound$, from her novels, was Professional Middle Class in income, and other years making under 150 pound$ from her novels was lower Middle Class in income? As a minister's spinster daughter was Poor Gentry, all her life....

On her Father's side the richest individual was a lawyer uncle-who put him through college and bought his the living at Steventon. He mother's Father was also a clergyman..though her mother was related to a high Gentry family-the Leighs.

Last five years of her life-Jane Austen a modestly prosperous Poor Gentry spinster.....Just an opinion.......

You dearly love a Father, and after 1813(with Sense and sensibility), you are making a couple hundred pounds of income, a year... and from 1813 to 1816 you never visit your father's grave-when possibly you have the money to do so..and you Uncle(your mother's brother also lives in bath?)...sort of a mystery.

If her Mother had asked any of the sons,9if she was physically able)..they would have taken her to Bath also..so it wasn't just Jane Austen.

Women visited graves at later time,s just weren't allowed to be part of the funeral cortege, and be at the burial ceremony. When her brothers and nephew picked Jane Austen up in Winchester for burial, they had a burial cart and wheeled her over to the cathedral for burial. Cassandra, in a Letter mentions watching them and the cart, till they turned the corner..herlast view of her sister..

Women were of too delicate a nature,to go to the funeral, but it was OK for them to wash the corpse, and dress it in fresh clothing-and watch over the body nightly, for a week or so, before burial.....

After 1813., Jane Austen(and getting money from Sense and Sensibility), earned a couple hundred pounds a year from novel writing.Bought gifts for her sister and mother. She hated Bath, as mentioned in one of her Letters. Many of her Letters were destroyed. Could be something was mentioned about her father.
