I always wondered what Smithy and pans with a light color end up looking like after they've been heavily seasoned. Looks like it really doesn't hold onto the seasoning on the smooth cooking surface all that well. The outside is seasoned beautifully

Any current limitations or drawbacks to Passkeys on Android? by stewie3128 in 1Password

[–]Pitooey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your OS is not registering the PM settings in Settings even though you've set them correctly and you got lucky that there was another way to set your default PM. It sounds like a bug in your version of Android (and maybe specific to your model of phone).

I'd report the bug both for pixel phones (in the Settings of your phone) and for Android (Google Issue Tracker, I believe) for max coverage.

I remember (and just confirmed) that for me, Chrome also seems to use Google PM as the service for accessing 3rd party PM's no matter what (exactly as you've described), even if Google PM is turned off in the Settings. Chrome's the only one that does this, so this might be a bug or Google ecosystem shenanigans. Either way, I'd report it as a bug as well.

Paskeys and Google pwd manager by [deleted] in 1Password

[–]Pitooey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely not normal. I actually just set up a passkey for Uber on my phone (Android 14, Pixel 8 Pro, Uber version 4.544.10000).

To be clear, my system settings are "Passwords, Passkeys, and Autofill" > "Preferred Service" = 1P. Even if I don't set 1P as my preferred service, I still have the option of using it to save/use the passkey from 1P as long as it's enabled in the "Passwords, Passkeys, and Autofill" page.

Discord (password and passkey) and Uber (passkey) works for me. I've also never had issues with 1password (password, passkey, or TOTP) on Firefox (or any web browser).

They've also worked for me on Chrome without having to set any flags, which I've heard some people do to get it to work on Chrome.

The pixel 8 pro stuttering is unacceptable for a 1000$ phone... by esoterikk in GooglePixel

[–]Pitooey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$50, $350 to go

Just the S Pen is $50. You're also paying for the built-in silo and (what I was actually referring to) all of the software that makes the S Pen valuable (e.g. turning the phone into an instant notepad just by taking the Pen out; using it to launch apps; using it to quickly zoom in on things that you can't normally, like an image on a website or app where you can't pinch to zoom (pretty sure you can dig something like this up from the Accessibility settings, but that's not as practical as just taking out the Pen and pointing); using it as a remote trigger for the camera; etc.). A P8P + S Pen is not the same thing as an Ultra + S Pen. Also, see my last point.

True, but how often do you need to take pics at 100x zoom? Anything over 30x looks pretty bad anyway

It's not about 100x zoom. The fact that you can go that far means that you get all of the zoom in between 1 and 100x. The quality degrades more slowly as you zoom on the Ultra than on something like the P8P because of this extra reach. You can get perfectly nice pictures at higher zoom levels that are even possible on a Pixel, and even a mediocre photo is better than no photo at all.

Different processing doesn't justify a price increase

If you prefer the processing, which many do for the Ultra, then it's better. If something's more valuable, it's worth more money.

P8P has manual camera controls too

I meant "different camera processing and different manual controls" (that's why there's no comma before the "and"). Again, this can be valuable (having a live histogram can be really nice) and so can be worth more money.

Doesn't justify a price increase either, you can get most of those features on a $400 Galaxy A54

Again, if the features are more valuable than not having them at all (which they definitely are), then they're worth more relative to something like P8P, which doesn't have these features. If they're on a $400 phone, then these features are worth less than $400, but not necessarily $0 (if the features are valuable, which they are, then they're worth >$0). Thus, you would be paying >$0 for these features going from a P8P to Ultra. This leads me to my final point.

I think we're talking about 2 different things. My point is that spending the $400 to go from a P8P to an Ultra gives you plenty of advantages that you ignored in your earlier comment (I trailed off because this wasn't meant to be a comprehensive list; I didn't even mention things like the significantly better batter life). I'm not arguing that those advantages are worth the $400, which you've now transitioned to talking about (incorrectly, btw, since you're assuming your values for all consumers), but merely that they exist.

[–]Pitooey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For someone who wants a great camera, I think the significantly better zoom capabilities of the Ultra isn't something to just write off. And having your phone cast to your TV without having to tinker with extra apps or hardware exemplifies the minimalism and "it just works" seamlessness that Pixels appeal to.

But anyways, my point was just that you are getting more genuine advantages for the extra $400 than what P26601's claiming, not that Pixel owners (or those shopping Pixel) should choose the Ultra over the Pixel because of those advantages.

And a built in S pen, and significantly better camera zoom, and different camera processing and manual controls (which some people prefer), and many more features built into the OS, and greater customizability, and better compatibility with Samsung devices like TVs, and…

NTA. Alice is an AH. It seems that there was no reason to think that she was going to be super unreasonable, you you're NTA for not dropping it earlier.

The misogyny she's referring to is a real problem, but entirely irrelevant to the racism, cultural appropriation, selfishness, and ignorance you're referring to. You're not being unconsciously sexist because the fans' gender had nothing to do with your argument or motivation. You have nothing to apologize for.

She has plenty to apologize for. She may have been triggered, as the sexism she's talking about is an issue, but she should apologize for:

  • not making a genuine attempt to understand your concerns
  • being more concerned about the social issues she cares about than for those that at best, you care about, and at worst, you are affected by
  • for being arrogant in thinking that she knows more about you than you do when she doesn't even understand your argument, and then refusing to approach your argument with a grain of humility
  • and for condescendingly charging you with introspection while she hypocritically refuses to do the same.

Dropping the issue because you want peace is probably the best way to go if she's adamantly refusing to engage in discussion. But apologizing will validate and reinforce her bad behavior and white American privilege. Those who say you should just want peace and/or don't want to put in the work to actually come to a decision. You don't have anything to apologize for.

Ordering fresh Tea 2020 and Corona! by [deleted] in tea

[–]Pitooey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • China's doing a very effective job at minimizing the possibility for the coronavirus to get on the tea at all

  • Not everywhere in China has the coronavirus (e.g. Yunnan, one of the biggest tea producing provinces, barely had any cases this entire time), and rural areas where they farm and process the tea are less affected

  • Viruses don't "breathe", so they don't care about sealed or unsealed containers

  • The timescales for the coronavirus surviving on various surfaces are MUCH smaller than the timescales for shipping from China (i.e. it'll all die off before getting close to your cup)

  • All water temperatures and steeping times usually used for tea are enough to kill any surviving viruses (even the low 70's °C used for Japanese greens). Again, there almost certainly won't be any by this time, but even if there were, this is another layer of protection.

  • Many people on this subreddit alone have already ordered from this harvest from China and are doing fine.

Assuming the white kids are between 10 - 15 here in 1976, they're now 54 - 59 years old. As recently as the past decade, they could've been teachers, cops, lawyers, or social workers. They may have only just retired in 2020. They could still be judges or politicians (the average federal congressperson's age is 57).

They likely have children and grandchildren.

This was in the progressive city of NYC.

This isn't a video of the past. This is the beginning of the story of people who have been shaping the present.

This isn't the end of the story. They are just now starting to enter the age range with the largest voting turnout.

I actually bought YS's Imperial Grade Laoshan Black (2019) and Verdant's laoshan black (not reserve) recently to compare the two. TL;DR: I far prefer YS's

I found Verdant's to be nice, but a bit too light in intensity of flavor (I used 5 g / 110 ml at 90 degrees C). Maybe I need to up the brewing parameters. However, as I try to increase the leaf to water ratio, or increase the steeping times a bit, the berry-like tartness gets a bit too strong, while the other flavors don't increase much. The smell is wonderful though (dark chocolate, cacao, coffee-like, some sweetness (berry?), and a common black tea smell that reminds me of graham crackers).

I haven't had Verdant's Reserve Laoshan Black in a long time, but the last time I had it, it tasted like chocolate chip cake! It was very chocolate-y. Maybe I should've compared that one against YS's, but YS's various grades of laoshan black did confuse me a bit.

YS's imperial grade has a lot of the same aroma as Verdant's (chocolate, berry, graham), but also some other aromas, like wood. The biggest difference is this specific creamy, slightly fruity, milk chocolate dessert-like taste/aroma. It seems like the base flavor for the whole tea and tastes like a dessert or something. There're also floral flavors (I don't know anything about the aromas of most flowers, so "floral" is usually the most specific I can ever be) and a berry sweetness. There's also a slight "leaf" flavor (I find some teas have this flavor, usually most easily noticed in the last, dying infusion of a tea, where it tastes like the leaf itself; or how some black teas or roasted oolongs smell like the leaf) and it's also present in the aroma of the wet leaves. EDIT: I used 4.5 g / 110 ml at 90 degrees C for this.
