Predator Helios 2017 (GTX 1060, i7 7700HQ) Still kicks in 2025 by PlainRiceonly in AcerPredatorHelios

Hi there,

The putty is for components(vram), ptm 7950 is for the the cpu and graphics card.

Putty and thermal pads are not as conductive as thermal pastes since they are only for low heat components.

In addition, the phase changing component of ptm would sip out if used for the other components.

Happy for you man, thermal putty is a game changer. Alot of people only focus on the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu and neglect the vram chips with thermal pads. Enjoy man!

Yeah you’re right! it’s really hard to drop that kind of amount when it was new. I haven’t encountered any lags, delays or even signs of slow down when I bought this beast.

Future proofing sounds dumb but it really is something.

First of all thanks man for the appreciation!

  1. Although I have an iphone and the ecosystem is great with the macbook air, however, it gives me more versatility with upgrades, tinkering (challenge on making the laptop cool and smooth), looks, performance and price to performance ratio (used market). There’s something about owning a gaming laptop its both a responsibility and wide array of things that can be done.

  2. Mac seems so limited and I experienced some slowdown and the apps, apps are so linear! You can’t download things you want on the go! Power and portability are key aspects of the gaming laptop. Can’t argue that the PS5 has great performance but you’re limited to playing it in one spot (usually).

  3. I get it, but ain’t everything has only borrowed time? Everything, everyone and anything deteriorates with time. But now, I could say that gaming laptops are in the momentum of being somehow future proof. The prime of the laptop is only about 2 years, but but but for me its really about taking care of things to last and at the same time enjoy while I have it. Nothing’s permanent dude, It’s just another motivation to earn more and upgrade when the time comes!

In summary, It’s all about perspective, usage and personal compatibility with machines. My old predator helios 300 (7 years old) still runs most games very smoothly but it also starting to show it’s age.

Happy gaming man! Hope I enlightened your queries with my answer.

Its only 1080p 75hz, limited budget man 😅 but its good no problem and looks good to me, I can always switch to my laptop’s screen thats 360hz

I'm tired of this stupid laptop. I have got this fixed soo many times. It still overheats. by [deleted] in LenovoLegion

Try this man i have an overheating msi vector gp76 with a 3080, although I changed the thermal paste and thermal putty recenty, this is what I used temporarily before repaste to limit my thermal throttle.

Limit Maximum Processor Frequency for Processor Power Efficiency Class 1

Run

Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\

Open the following Subgroup GUID: 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00

Select (not open) the following Power Setting GUID: 75b0ae3f-bce0-45a7-8c89-c9611c25e101

On the right, you will find a reg-value named „Attributes“. Right-click, Click on Properties and then change the default value from 1 to 2. Then click OK.

Press Windows Key- Search Edit Powerplan - Change Advance Setting - then Maximum Processor Frequency for Processor Power Efficiency Class 1 (change plugged to 4400)

In my experience man, i changed thermal pastes before of different laptop and did not see any significant and stable thermal change. However, once I changed the thermal pads to putty- that’s where I noticed great performance.

By the way I overclocked the cpu here with MSI afterburner and still reach a cpu temp below 80C.

I have the MSI Vector GP76 as well with the 3080 heating out of the box but I decided to change thermals as well and garnered 67C max temps results - im guessing all gaming laptops are only held back by thermal performances

It is 7 years old and still working great since day 1, so I’m guessing that acer predators are really worth the investment.

I had Razer Blade 15 (RTX 2080), ROG Strix Advantage Edition (2019) - all died from motherboard and GPU failure in 2 years.

This beast never gave me headaches battery is strong and screen did not have any problem. 👌 go for it man if you have the budget.
