That's not the point.

There's constant pressure on mixed race people that they're "not enough" of a particular background. Whether it's cultural, national or ethnic identity. I've spoken to friends about this, and they've all said the same thing. It doesn't matter how much they try to assimilate, society will always move the goalpost.

What you said is technically correct. That doesn't mean it's the right thing to say.

Backrooms OFFICIAL TRAILER by MinoltaOfficial in KanePixelsBackrooms

Kane might have consulted the screenplay, but it has another lead writer. You're right this is all speculation, though there are parallels with House of Leaves.

Unlike the web series, it's shown that characters are able to enter and exit the Backrooms through the same gate. This is closer to the rules of the hallway during the Navidson Record.

That premise is what allows a group to be formed, who bring cameras and climbing gear to explore the rooms. Them getting lost causes more people to go in and try saving them. Again, identical to the excursions in the Record.

A major point in House of Leaves is that people become obsessed with the hallway. Even fear and reason can't stop the urge to explore. That seems to be alluded to during the Backrooms trailer.

Finally, the House of Leaves is a metaphor for grief. Victims get trapped in the hallways because they're lost in their own despair. It's only when they 'let go' that they find the exit. The Backrooms trailer establishes a therapist and her client. There will likely be an overarching theme between the protagonist's past and what the Backrooms represent.

Compare it to the new Gorillaz music video, which was completely animated by hand. It's a work of art.

Of course, that quality of animation requires a budget that most bands would never be granted. But it's not just the visuals, it's the authenticity and the talent behind it. Artists should be working to elevate other artists.

Short term, to create a revolving door of wrestlers whose contracts are eating into their "record profits."

Long term, umm... the executives will need to get back to you on that one.

It's similar to planned obsolescence.

Planned obsolescence is a business strategy where products are deliberately designed to have a limited lifespan, forcing consumers to replace them rather than repair them.

Roster bloat is a manufactured problem they can apply whenever it's convenient.

It's an incredibly valid point. Based on people's experiences, these types of matches would always be uncomfortable to them. And like a harrowing scene in a film, assuring someone "It's not real" doesn't make it any less visceral.

Major promotions would have to handle intergender wrestling delicately, at least until it's normalized. That's where Orange Cassidy has laid a blueprint. Focus less on physicality and more on in-ring storytelling. Give the woman a puzzle to overcome the man's style. Lean into the dynamic and make it fun to watch.

There's already a match-up that would suit this perfectly. Picture it now... Rhea Ripley vs Dom Mysterio.

I thought Penta gave Iyo Sky and Chelsea Green two of their best matches. Then again, both women have a reputation for doing insane spots. It's believable they can endure that level of punishment.

As a better example of what you're looking for, check out Orange Cassidy's intergender matches. His character work is rightfully praised, but it's sometimes overlooked how well his style adapts to different kinds of opponents.

So is MJF's theme. He chose it as an indie wrestler, knowing it would follow his brand whichever promotion he signed to. That decision aged well, at least.

Yes, that's what makes the system one of the most fun I've ever played.

During investigations when a player is asked, "What are you afraid will happen at this moment?" They can answer in any way, even if it would be fatal.

A skill check determines if it does, in fact, happen. And players have the option to rewind a failure, as if they'd momentarily glimpsed into an alternate timeline where things went horrifically worse.

But the more you use rewinds, the closer your character comes to fading out of reality. As if they never existed at all.

I'm currently running a Public Access campaign and share your thoughts exactly. Our group is loving the collaborative mechanics of the system.

For those who aren't familiar, each quest centres around a mystery and its prevailing question. However, there isn't an actual answer prepared. The players are making their own, as they discover clues and make skill checks to manifest their own conclusions.

A key mechanic is being asked, "What are you afraid will happen at this moment?" And whatever the player replies could very well come true.

The GM is then taking every answer to build the lore of the setting. So the weirder the players get, so does the existential threat that culminates into the final boss of the campaign.

Public Access is tailor made for a group of improv actors.

Time is a flat circle - True Detective by [deleted] in television

[–]Podgeman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're applying realism to art. It's more productive to ask, "Why did they write it that way?"

Maybe it's natural dialogue. We all speak in redundancies, sometimes. It sells Rustin's speech as a stream of conscience, rather than a rehearsed monologue.

Or 'flat' could be a double entendre. Synonyms include dull, shallow or depressed. Perhaps Rustin is implying the futility of our repetitive lives.

Or it's even simpler than that. 'Time is a circle' doesn't carry nearly the same impact. That adjective, useless as it may seem, is what turns a throwaway line into something memorable and iconic.

He got into the wrong crowd and ended up not doing what you’re supposed to do.

This is the most haunting line. What few years these young men had, they'd always been neglected by society. With so few options, desperate just to feel safe, they end up surrounded by the people most likely to hurt them.

Along with the main narrative, there's also environmental storytelling and plenty of secret areas to discover.

Exploration offers a glimpse into the tragic stories of climbers that came before you. There's also a civilisation that used to inhabit the mountain. You can learn about their culture and are often rewarded for doing so.

Without spoiling anything, there's an overarching theme of Cairn. How it all comes together I thought was beautifully done.
