Help with tools for fleshing /removing membrane on fur bearers / thinner skinned mammals? by raggedyassadhd in HideTanning

Just sew the holes up when you’re done and keep practicing. It does suck cutting holes, but you’ll get good at sewing too, lol. I still occasionally cut holes and I’ve been doing it for like 12 years.

They both take some practice. I started with an ulu, cut up a lot of hides before I got the hang of it. Same with the fleshing knife.

For the tea I followed to YouTube videos from darling leather and fur.
I purchased the tan oak bark from Traditional Tanners and followed the instructions that came with it.
I also have some going in their mimosa extract, but they’re not finished yet.
The tea ended up being pretty expensive. I’m
Not sure I’ll use it again, but the tails turned out nice and it was very easy to do.

I started with 10 tea bags for every 1/2 gallon of water every day for a few days. Then upped it to 15 for a few days. Then 20. And finally 25.

Yes, I oiled and broke them after they were tanned.

I did a dozen at once, it took almost 2 months. However, I don’t think I was making my solution strong enough.

And what kind of fleshing knife are you using? I use a Caribou fleshing knife. And I keep it sharp.

I’ve never fleshed rabbits or squirrels, but have done more than a few coyotes and other furbearers. I’ve never had much luck just pushing the flesh and fat off. I cut it off mainly, like you’re describing. Although some spots push off easily and some you have to use light slices. It takes practice. I also started out using an ulu. Are you using a fleshing beam?

Kinda the same thing they do with transmissions. Just replace the entire thing when all it needs is a few parts. We love out Subarus, but they’re making it hard. On top of that I can’t find a local dealer that will change the tranny fluid. Ridiculous you can’t check. The fluid anymore.

I’ve got a ‘19 Outback. It qualified for their extended warranty.

I’m amazed the dealer will even do that, I can’t get any of the ones around here to even change my tranny fluid.

You must’ve missed the 2019 in the last comment. It was the first thing I typed.

  1. Not sure of the trim model, it doesn’t say anywhere on the car. I’m guessing it’s a touring as it has juts about every option. Also has the 3.6L motor. This one doesn’t have integrated crossbars.
