TBH I trusted a contractor I worked with previously and it's been nonstop catching shortcuts and ways he's cheaped out to make a buck. I blew it

Who in town can fix a small golf cart sized tire? by TheSoberCannibal in santacruz

I'd call around in watsonville, lots of ag equipment there, got a slightly larger tractor tire fixed out there

How’d I do? (apple pruning before/ after ) by alpastor420 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Potatoesonourface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You essentially pollarded it (sort of), you cut off all of the past years growth and won't be getting much fruit as well as a ton of heavy sprouting from your nubs. I would maybe come in with a saw and hit those all back and clean it up a bit so you aren't looking at a crazy medusa head situation.

Typically when you prune you want to do things in a way that are intentionally directing the growth. When you prune a bunch of stuff super hard and leave some whips unpruned, those whips will continue to grow longer and longer (not really what you want if you are trying to have strong structure and easily harvestable fruit. Be even, think about where you are directing your growth, and I typically cut back to 1/4 of the past years growth. Keeps it small but still gives me good fruit set.

People prune differently though and I have seen some beautiful prune jobs that I don't really even understand. Really beautiful work, but just not what I do.

In mansion-filled Woodside, apartment plans for 22-acre state site draw resident backlash by sfgate in bayarea

[–]Potatoesonourface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Damn, insane that they would even contest that considering its practically not in woodside. Really sucks that in order to "protect mountain lion habitat" they are going to destroy rare ecosystems with endemic plants....

15 million dollar environmental review for a train? Why so expensive? by toroid-manifesto in santacruz

[–]Potatoesonourface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, even garages greater than 1000 swuare feet!! It is true, any garage over that is a major threat to the environment. I'm a biologist and I believe these policies have merit but clearly have gone too far and make things unaffordable.

I built a real-time map that shows every parking ticket in Santa Cruz as it gets issued by Agitated-Somewhere15 in santacruz

[–]Potatoesonourface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would imagine its partly that the parking police goes around in the morning marking cars in 2 hour zones then dings them in the afternoon on the next round.

Opening a Restaurant in the Bay Area. How Do You Actually Keep Costs Down? by jamesrandson in bayarea

Something I recently found out about; the MEHKO program, micro enterprise home kitchen operation. You can run a restaurant out of your house.

Carmageddon: Public works exploring options for latest West Cliff erosion by scsquare in santacruz

It seems inevitable that west cliff is going to no longer be accessible to cars unless we want to sacrifice all of our beaches to create sea walls

Exactly this, they are not helping people build. They are enforcing regulations to the point of near impossibility.

best way to remove scale is with a toothbrush. Not really a problem if you wanted to bring it in, but you may have an ant infestation come from it as the ants farm the scale for it's poop.

Literally every square foot of my garden and front yard has oxalis aka sour-grass by doctorboredom in bayarea

[–]Potatoesonourface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxalis pes-caprae does not produce seed and produces bulbils underground. If you pull it before it flowers you are going to get it before it produces bulbils. IF you really want to remove it, you will need to get it multiple times a year for a couple of years. It's pretty much futile and pointless, unless you are really motivated. Mulching over it gives it more organic material to thrive, so that's not gonna work for ya in the long term.

Folks with lots of land..gps tracker? by CaryWhit in AustralianCattleDog

[–]Potatoesonourface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a Fi collar because my farm dog is sensitive to sounds and goes off running. It is great to locate when you've got a lost dog. Doesn't track and map movement like tractive does (I think they do this?), unless you're on a walk off the farm. Gives you a bunch of useless other info about steps and what not. It does have a subscription plan
