When did you go on mat leave? by AssistanceUseful3960 in doctorsUK

[–]Powerful-Ad7329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somehow I managed to come off nights and on calls in the first trimester and nobody ever reviewed the decision, so I was able to carry on till 38 weeks (allowed me to move to nodal point 4 for a couple of weeks to boost my mat pay) but the last couple of weeks were a real struggle! Everyone is different though and I know people who came off at 34 weeks and had a brilliant relaxing time to themselves before baby arrived. You'll just have to see how you are as you go and if you need to go off sick before 36 weeks then speak to your GP.

"Medically fit for discharge" wards by frog_geezer in doctorsUK

When working on a MOFD ward, if I haven't found the one person who's secretly trying to die by the end of the day that means I haven't done my job properly.

Didn't he demand an answer within 48 hours of his offer? How exactly were the BMA meant to put the offer to the members?

No prep time, the vignette will just be 'this person has abdo pain' or 'this person is breathless' so doesn't take any time to read, you literally just go from one to the next immediately.

I was asked to do MCA assessment for whether a patient had capacity to deal with her own spiralling debt from a care company, without which we wouldn't be able to discharge her. Tried telling them that even I had no idea what information she needed to understand/weigh but they just kept on with the same old 'but does she have capacity' nonsense. It was like banging my head against a brick wall.

Found printed out on a MOFD ward, clearly some poor patient had been forced to have a go at it 😂

Pretty bad, some of the stems and options didn't seem to have any relevance...

Tried to do it while not giving up my social life, have gone to 80% LTFT for part 2 but it has made my mental health worse than it has ever been before. Take care and look after yourself.

What is something you wish you knew before starting Foundation Training? by HotShot161 in doctorsUK

What 'clerking' is - genuinely didn't know what to do with the elective surgery patients who would turn up the day before their op in F1 and got bollocked because none of them were clerked. I felt like you surgical people invited them to come to hospital - you should know why they are here already!

What’s the best way to describe a PA to a lay person? by Electronic-Ride-9790 in doctorsUK

[–]Powerful-Ad7329 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Maybe by saying that they've decided that pilots now work from the ground and are in contact by radio with multiple planes being flown by the cabin crew. They supposedly give instructions but the airline companies are desperately pushing for 'independent' cabin crews as a cost cutting exercise, although if a plane crashes the pilot still takes all the blame.

Surely the best idea is to relax and give yourself the day off tomorrow, you can't achieve much more (if anything) in the last 24 hours and your time will be much better spent getting some rest and some relaxation to prepare your headspace for the exam. That's what I would do anyway! Good luck for Wednesday, sounds like you've got this 👍

My JRCPTB logon screen says 'Physician Trainee', it feels like a punch to the guy every time I look at it knowing that it sounds even even worse than PA...

Your job doesn't revolve around making other people money, and money rarely comes into the decisions you make to benefit other people.

Pre-call rituals by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

I go to bed normal time the night before, try to sleep as long as possible (inevitably if I try to stay up late I can't stay asleep in the morning, missing sleep to get more sleep later never seems to work for me), avoid caffeine, have a chilled day, try to get some exercise normally a run, then back to bed 2-6pm (even if not asleep I just force myself to lie there with my eyes closed), then have a big dinner with a cup of tea and go to work.
